Nel momento in cui si conoscono, Gabriel Oak e Bathsheba Everdene sono due persone antitetiche: fattore benestante, dai modi un po’ frugali, il primo; bellissima e nullatenente, ospite di una zia, la seconda. Nonostante l’invidiabile posizione sociale del signor Oak, Bathsheba rifiuta la sua appassionata corte. Dopo una terribile tempesta, tuttavia, i ruoli si invertono: Bathsheba ha ora ereditato la florida azienda agricola dello zio, mentre Gabriel, caduto in miseria, è costretto a farsi assumere proprio da lei come pastore.

Pubblicato a puntate nel 1891 sulla rivista The Graphic, fu censurato per essere poi ripubblicato in tre volumi nella versione integrale.

Scritto nel 1874, apparso anonimo a puntate, il romanzo ottenne generali critiche positive e segnò l'inizio della carriera letteraria dell'autore. È la storia di una ragazza che, nel temperamento e nella volontà di indipendenza, sembra l'antesignana di Rossella o'Hara di "Via col vento". (Una delle sue frasi: "mi piacerebbe sposarmi, se solo non dovessi poi vivere con un marito"). La vita impartirà una dura lezione al suo orgoglio.
