Robert Louis Stevensons Romane und Erzählungen sind weltbekannt geworden. Von 1890 bis zu seinem Tod 1894 lebte er auf der Samoa - Insel Upolu. Dort entstand auch die Novelle "Der Flaschenteufel", in der Keawe, der Held der Erzählung, in den Besitz einer Flasche gelang, in der ein Teufel wohnt, der alle Wünsche erfüllen kann.
