Carmilla, published in 1872, was one of the first vampire novels and is certainly among the most sensuous with its strong lesbian overtones. When, one night, Carmilla crashes her carriage into view nearby, Laura’s life changes rapidly into something feverish and erotic. The relationship that develops between the two women forms the blueprint for the lesbian vampire trope in all the stories that follow. But as Laura becomes plagued with nightmares and starts displaying strange symptoms, the truth about Carmilla—and its implications—come into the light.
