All'indomani dell'armistizio, l'8 settembre 1943, oltre seicentomila italiani rifiutarono di continuare a combattere nelle file dell'esercito tedesco.

Spanning the years 1940 to 1965, Defender of the Realm, the third volume of William Manchester’s The Last Lion, picks up shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister—when his tiny island nation stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. The Churchill portrayed by...

Vienna, 1971.

When Germany’s Sixth Army advanced to Stalingrad in 1942, its long-extended flanks were mainly held by its allied armies - the Romanians, Hungarians, and Italians. But as history tells us, these flanks quickly caved in before the massive Soviet counter-offensive which commenced that November, dooming the Germans to their first catastrophe of the war. However, the historical record also makes clear that one allied unit held out to the very end, fighting to stem the tide - the Italian Alpine Corps.

In 1943, there were more than 60 prisoner of war camps throughout Mussolini's Italy. Behind barbed wire and under the guards' dark gaze were captive Allied soldiers. After the Italian Armistice thousands escaped as guards deserted their posts, but when German forces swept down the peninsula to...

Me ne stavo in albergo, a chiedermi: dov’è finita la Costituzione?

If the Second World War was Hitler's war, the vast military conflict that engulfed the Mediterranean between 1940 and 1945 was Mussolini's. In this exciting and illuminating account, Anthony Tucker-Jones explores the major campaigns across the whole Mediterranean, from the struggle for control of the Suez Canal to the Allied landings in the French Riviera in the summer of 1944. The actions of famous generals are introduced, including Erwin Rommel, Bernard Montgomery and George S. Patton, and how their strategic offensives pushed back Axis forces.

The six-month battle for Monte Cassino was Britain's bitterest and bloodiest encounter with the German army on any front in World War Two. At the beginning of 1944 Italy was the western Allies' only active front against Nazi-controlled Europe, and their only route to the capital was through the...
