The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann is a classic novel set in a Swiss sanatorium during the years leading up to World War I. The story follows Hans Castorp, a young engineer, who arrives for a short visit to his ailing cousin but ends up staying for seven years. The novel explores themes of time, illness, and the clash of ideas, with the sanatorium serving as a microcosm of European society on the brink of war. Mann uses the setting to delve into philosophical debates between characters, blending irony, humor, and profound insights into the human condition.

Edgar Allan Poe’s life was marked by hardship, loss, and personal demons that mirrored the dark themes in his writing. Orphaned at a young age, he struggled with unstable foster care, financial troubles, and a constant battle with alcoholism. His literary career, though groundbreaking, was plagued by critical rejection and poverty. Poe experienced profound sorrow from the deaths of loved ones, including his young wife, Virginia, whose illness deeply affected him. In 1849, he was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore under mysterious circumstances and died shortly after at the age of 40.

"Emma" by Jane Austen is a delightful comedy of manners that offers a nuanced exploration of love, self-discovery, and the complexities of social hierarchy in Regency-era England. The novel follows the titular character, Emma Woodhouse, a well-meaning but meddlesome young woman who fancies herself a matchmaker. As Emma sets out to arrange marriages for those around her, she soon discovers that her well-intentioned interference often leads to unintended consequences, ultimately forcing her to confront her own misconceptions about love and happiness.

"Electra," one of the enduring tragedies of ancient Greek literature attributed to playwrights like Sophocles and Euripides, explores themes of revenge, justice, and familial duty. The play revolves around the eponymous Electra, daughter of King Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra, who seeks vengeance for her father's murder at the hands of her mother and her lover, Aegisthus. Consumed by grief and a thirst for retribution, Electra becomes a tragic figure trapped in a cycle of violence, torn between her loyalty to her father's memory and the moral ambiguity of her actions.

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the most important and influential American writers of the 19th century. He was the first author to try to make a professional living as a writer. Much of Poe’s work was inspired by the events that happened around him. His poetry alone would ensure his spot in the literary canon. Poe’s notable verses range from the early masterpiece “To Helen” to the dark, mysterious “Ulalume.” From “The Raven,” which made him world-famous upon its publication in 1845, to “Annabel Lee,” the posthumously published eulogy for a maiden “in a kingdom by the sea.”

"Julius Caesar" by William Shakespeare is a compelling tragedy set in ancient Rome, focusing on the political intrigue and personal ambitions that surround the historical figure of Julius Caesar. The play begins with Caesar's triumphant return to Rome after defeating his rival Pompey, which ignites fear among senators like Cassius and Brutus who perceive Caesar's growing power as a threat to the Republic. Cassius, manipulating Brutus's idealism and sense of duty to the state, convinces him that Caesar must be stopped to preserve Roman liberty.

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" delves into the moral decay of its protagonist, Dorian Gray, who remains youthful while his portrait ages, serving as a chilling allegory for the corrupting influence of vanity and hedonism in Victorian society. "The Importance of Being Earnest" is a sparkling comedy of manners that satirizes the absurdities of societal conventions and the pursuit of love and marriage through the humorous escapades of two men leading double lives as Ernest.

Published posthumously in 1919, this collection of diary entries presents a scathing picture of army life and is said to be one of the most vivid accounts of daily life in the trenches. It chronicles West's increasing disillusion with war and his move toward pacifist and atheist beliefs. The final part consists of his powerful war poems, including God, How I Hate You, You Young Cheerful Men, and Night Patrol. West was killed by a sniper in 1917. In view of some of his poems, one wonders if death was not unwelcome.

Walter Besant was a novelist and historian, and his topographical and historical writings were probably best known through the detailed 10-volume Survey of London published after his death. This earlier single volume covers, in less depth, the whole period from prehistory until the 19th century. The book appears originally to have been written for boys, and, indeed, the chapters are called "Lessons". However, it is a very listenable history and provides a fascinating insight into both London's past and the government of the city at the time the book was written in 1894.

A House to Let is a short story originally published in 1858 in the Christmas edition of Dickens' Household Words magazine. The plot concerns an elderly woman, Sophonisba, who notices signs of life in a supposedly empty dilapidated house (the eponymous "House to Let") opposite her own, and employs the efforts of an elderly admirer, Jabez Jarber, and her servant, Trottle, to discover what is happening within.
