    Feb 29 2024

In this podcast, Dave explores the differences in fasting experiences between men and women, shedding light on the unique challenges women face due to hormonal fluctuations throughout their menstrual cycle. Drawing from Dr. Mindy Peltz’s book "Fast Like A Girl," the Dave discusses how factors like energy levels, cognition, and focus vary for women during different phases of their cycle compared to men. Dave emphasises the importance of understanding these differences to be better husbands, brothers and allies to women.

The podcast highlights key points such as:

    • Women's hormonal changes impact energy levels, cognition, and creativity throughout their cycle, which should be considered in workplace dynamics and healthcare advice.
    • Certain women, such as those with eating disorders or who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should avoid fasting.
    • The menstrual cycle breakdown is explained, including optimal fasting times and dietary considerations for each phase.

  • Episode 20 - Does X break a fast
    Dec 22 2023

In Episode 20 of The Naru FastCast, Dave discusses whether various substances or actions break a fast and impact the benefits of fasting, such as ketosis, gut rest, weight management, and autophagy. It highlights that fasting is not a one-size-fits-all approach and should align with individual goals and preferences. Key points covered include:

    • Ketosis: Fasting rapidly induces ketosis, a state known for fat burning and cognitive benefits.
    • Resting the Gut: Fasting affects daily rhythms in the gut, impacting the gut microbiome and immune system.
    • Weight Management: Fasting encourages the use of existing fat stores for energy and helps manage calorie intake.
    • Autophagy: Fasting triggers autophagy, a cellular process that removes damaged components and supports cell function.

The podcast also addresses common questions about substances and their impact on fasting, such as black coffee, tea, medications, bone broth, lemon water, sweeteners, and more. It provides verdicts for each substance based on its potential effect on metabolic health, gut rest, and longevity during fasting.

The conclusion emphasises that the impact of substances on fasting can vary, and individuals should consider their specific fasting goals and consult with healthcare professionals if they have concerns or medical conditions.

  • Episode 19 - Feed the FAST! The best Pre & Post Fasting meals.
    Dec 15 2023

In Episode 19 of The NaruFast Dave discusses the importance of timing and food choices when fasting. It emphasises that fasting is not a cure-all for a poor diet but rather focuses on when and what you eat. Breaking a fast is particularly crucial, as the meal immediately after fasting has a significant impact. Dave explains that the body transitions from fat to glucose metabolism when breaking a fast, making it sensitive to glucose intake. To optimise this transition, the podcast suggests following five principles for the ideal fast-breaking meal, including prioritising protein, minding fibrous vegetables, delaying carb intake, enhancing gut microbiome, and practicing mindful eating.

The podcast also highlights the significance of pre-fasting meals in influencing the body's transition into fat-burning mode during fasting. It discusses the role of insulin and carbohydrates, offering tips on choosing the right carbohydrates. It emphasises balancing protein and healthy fats and recommends smaller, nutrient-dense pre-fast meals, with larger meals when breaking the fast. Additionally, it suggests incorporating light exercise to aid in glucose utilisation and fat storage. Overall, the podcast provides valuable insights into optimising fasting for improved metabolic health and weight management.
