    English version:

I love coming up here, on the acropolis, to the highest point of the city where we've build temples in honour of our gods. You see, I don't know why but this view calms me and frees my mind. Look at the sea, you can see it shimmering in the twighlight sun even though it's 60 stages away! And can you see the island of Sasson? It looks like a whale coming up to the surface to spout water. Did you know that female whales carry their young in their bellies like human women? It's Aristotle who wrote about it. It's rather as if I were making the voyage of our ancestors from Corinth and Corcyra when they arrived by sea to settle here at the mouth of the Aoos. When I'm here, I imagine them coming up the river you can just make out over there. Our ancestors from this distance of ten stages must have already been able to see our two hills of Apollonia, the one with the Apollo temple where we are and the Acropolis. Today, the properties and pastures are rich and prosperous in the surrounding hills. And the nearer you get to our vast city, the more you realise that there are a great many of us. But my favourite time is when the darkness of the night enfolds us, when the town and the countryside plunged into darkness, fade and disappear. Listen carefully, you would think the town belongs to the animals when the humans are asleep. There's just the temple of the tar goddess acting as a locator beacon. The flame in the temple shines day and night, it's like the city lighthouse marking the limits of our territory. Come on, it's very late. Let's go and sleep and dream in our house. The priest told me that Apollo had sent him a strange vision while he was asleep. The acropolis was empty, there were no longer any temples. Instead, there were underground passages under the hill and iron birds like phoenixes flying over the city. Well, only the gods know the future.

    English version:

The kids are very restless today! Will you look at that! They’re jostling, arguing, shouting and running all over the place, what a festival! The street is the children’s territory, the elders prefer sitting wisely in the shade under the arcade of the stoa to protect themselves from the sun and catch the fresh breeze when the wind gets up in the early afternoon. If the kids are so excited, it must be because of the gathering storm. They’re waiting impatiently for it! You could already see the lightning in the distance over the city of Avlon, this morning. You could already see the lightning in the distance over the city of Avlon, this morning. The black clouds are coming up from the south, the sky is darkening visibly, the thunder is starting to rumble, the rain won’t be long coming. My work is directly linked to storms and rain. I maintain the gutters and drains of the city. I clean them when they’re filled with earth and rubbish. People throw their litter any old how! Over time, our great city has acquired a magnificent system to get rid of or store rain water. But in order for it to work, you have to carefully calculate the gradient so that the water drains out to the walls without overflowing onto the streets. You have to build sumps and tanks to convey and store the water. A huge job given the size and needs of our city. There we are, it’s raining hard. The boldest children are jumping with both feet in the puddles and splashing each other. Hey look, there’s one opening his mouth wide to drink the rain. He’s going to get soaked to the bone. It’s not going to last, the mothers are already coming to get the smallest ones and scolding them when they’re covered in mud. They’re still carefree, life is good for them. I didn’t have such a happy childhood. My father often whipped me severely and my mother died giving birth to me. Maybe that’s why my father never loved me. Come on, children, shelter yourselves now or Zeus will send you a lightning bolt for your insolence! And remember the words of Heraclitus: “Time is a child playing!” Just because I clean drains doesn’t mean I know nothing about philosophy.

Miremengjes Bostro! E hasim gjithnje e me pak. Duket sikur ka turp. Pse? Thatësira do të jetë e fortë këtë verë.

    English version:

Hello Bostro! You're always an early bird! The first at the fountain, at dawn, to fetch water! And the last in the household to go to bed, well after nightfall. We're serving our husbands, those good-for-nothings whose only use is to give us children. On that topic, do you have any news of Klea? We see less and less of her. It's as though she's ashamed. Why? Well, as you know, she can't manage to bear a child. Plator her husband is getting bitter and nasty towards her. We're not just bellies! Besides, who can say that it's not Plator's sperm which is faulty. A husband who can't please his wife can't provide her with good fruit. Yes and Klea admitted to me that spending the night with him is a complete bore. The poor thing… her neighbour said that she heard her cries, her husband is starting to beat her more and more often. Klea is afraid of being repudiated.Yes , he's the type to force women. Poor Klea, she's so nice. We could talk to our husbands and tell them to get Plator to be kinder to his wife. Yes, you're right, if we women of all circumstances don't show solidarity, our men behave like animals. Yes, like animals….Yes this man is bad, I hate him. And have you seen the way he looks at all the women as if we were nothing but meat? It's outrageous. Have you seen the water level, Bostro? It's very low this year. The streams which feed our big fountain are drying up. There will be serious drought this year. And the harvests are likely to be bad. I say, how about we go and see Klea and comfort her? Good idea, let's go. Koordinimi i projektit Storie Nostrum në Shqipëri: Vincent Mespoulet
