English version:

I love coming up here, on the acropolis, to the highest point of the city where we've build temples in honour of our gods. You see, I don't know why but this view calms me and frees my mind. Look at the sea, you can see it shimmering in the twighlight sun even though it's 60 stages away! And can you see the island of Sasson? It looks like a whale coming up to the surface to spout water. Did you know that female whales carry their young in their bellies like human women? It's Aristotle who wrote about it. It's rather as if I were making the voyage of our ancestors from Corinth and Corcyra when they arrived by sea to settle here at the mouth of the Aoos. When I'm here, I imagine them coming up the river you can just make out over there. Our ancestors from this distance of ten stages must have already been able to see our two hills of Apollonia, the one with the Apollo temple where we are and the Acropolis. Today, the properties and pastures are rich and prosperous in the surrounding hills. And the nearer you get to our vast city, the more you realise that there are a great many of us. But my favourite time is when the darkness of the night enfolds us, when the town and the countryside plunged into darkness, fade and disappear. Listen carefully, you would think the town belongs to the animals when the humans are asleep. There's just the temple of the tar goddess acting as a locator beacon. The flame in the temple shines day and night, it's like the city lighthouse marking the limits of our territory. Come on, it's very late. Let's go and sleep and dream in our house. The priest told me that Apollo had sent him a strange vision while he was asleep. The acropolis was empty, there were no longer any temples. Instead, there were underground passages under the hill and iron birds like phoenixes flying over the city. Well, only the gods know the future.
