The Shift There is a moment, near the end of a month like this, when it becomes possible to look back and realise that something may have changed without ever announcing itself clearly.
Not everything feels transformed. Not every part feels steady. Not every old pull has disappeared. And yet, when one evening from the beginning is placed beside one evening from now, they may not feel quite the same.
This episode begins with that quiet comparison.
The Shift is a Sourel from The Clearing, created for the moment before the ending, when there is still time to pause and notice what has already moved. Not as a performance. Not as a measurement. Not as a way of deciding whether the month has been a success or a failure. Simply as an honest act of recognition.
This reflection gently invites you to look back at the first evening this month, when something different was asked of you. The tightness. The restlessness. The familiar pull. The part of you that may have wondered how to get through an evening without reaching for what usually softened the edges. Then it invites you to place that memory beside a recent evening and notice what is actually true now.
For some, the shift may be obvious. The body may feel calmer. Sleep may be different. The evening may have less charge. The craving may still appear, but no longer feels quite as powerful. For others, the shift may be harder to name. A subtle quieting. A little more space. A sense that something takes less effort, even if it is difficult to explain exactly what changed or when.
Both matter.
This episode explores how real change often gathers in the background. It does not always arrive as a single moment of proof. It gathers through small pauses, repeated choices, moments of discomfort that were allowed to rise and fall, and the parts of us that have been learning in ways the mind may not have fully noticed yet.
The Shift is not asking you to celebrate before you are ready. It is not asking you to pretend the month has been easy. It is not asking you to turn your experience into a neat story. It simply offers a place to recognise one thing that feels different now than when you began.
It closes with a gentle invitation to hold two ordinary moments side by side: one from the beginning and one from now. No judgement. No forcing. Just enough stillness to notice whether they are, in some small and honest way, not quite the same.
The Shift is part of The Clearing, a special month-long companion created for anyone choosing to put alcohol down for all or part of July, whether through the official Dry July challenge, a personal commitment, simple curiosity or something in between. The Clearing is not affiliated with the official Dry July Trust, and does not raise funds on its behalf. If you would like to take part officially and support a genuinely good cause, you can do so directly through dryjuly.co.nz.
The Clearing walks alongside the inner experience of this month instead, with three short reflections a week, all the way through July.
You do not need to be finished to notice what has changed. You only need to pause long enough to recognise the quiet evidence that something in you has been learning a new way through.
If you find yourself wanting something to return to between these reflections, in the actual moment an urge, craving or old ritual takes hold, there is also an app called Settle and Source. It offers a ninety-second guided practice for the space between noticing the pull and knowing what to do next. It is not a replacement for anything here, simply another door, in case it is the right one for you. https://settleandsource.com
