Almost Done, Still HardThis episode opens the final week of The Clearing by naming something that often surprises people: the particular discomfort of the final stretch.
It would be reasonable to expect the end of something to feel easier than the beginning, that whatever has shifted by now would simply continue shifting smoothly toward a finish line. For many, the final days carry a different texture entirely, harder in ways the earlier weeks were not, often catching people off guard precisely because it was not expected.
This episode names the particular fatigue of nearly finishing something, distinct from the fatigue of the middle, harder to identify because it does not look like struggle from the outside. It also names something that can happen when early discomfort has genuinely eased, a sense that the hard part is over, that one evening now would not undo anything real.
Rather than frightening anyone into anything, this episode simply names this stretch honestly, as having its own texture, separate from everything that came before it.
It closes by asking the listener to acknowledge how far they have actually come since the very first Sourel, not in terms of perfect adherence to anything, but in terms of attention paid to something that may not have been looked at closely in years.
If you find yourself wanting something to return to between these reflections, in the actual moment a habit like this one takes hold, I also built an app called Settle and Source. It offers a ninety-second guided practice for exactly the kind of moment this essay has been describing, the gap between noticing an urge and knowing what to do with it. It is not a replacement for anything here, simply another door, in case it is the right one for you. https://settleandsource.com
