  • The Deadly KPI Mistake That Can Destroy a Healthy Business | Charbel Louis Karam
    Sep 24 2026

One KPI can tell you how your business is performing—and still lead you completely in the wrong direction.

In this From The Ground Up Show: Topics episode, Charbel Louis Karam explains why leaders should never evaluate a company through a single metric. Drawing on his experience as both a pilot and a business executive, he compares running a company to reading the instruments in an aircraft cockpit: any one gauge viewed in isolation can give you a dangerously incomplete picture.

A company can appear highly profitable while quietly losing customers. Sales can look impressive on paper while the business struggles to collect the cash. Customer growth can be exciting without producing sustainable profit.

Good leadership requires understanding how multiple pieces of information work together.

Charbel and Erick Loden also examine another common leadership trap: paralysis by analysis. Leaders will rarely have 100% of the information they want. At some point, they must identify which information actually matters, accept the remaining uncertainty, and make the decision.

This focused conversation explores why there is no single perfect KPI, how profitability can hide deeper problems, why a $30 million contract isn’t worth much if the customer never pays, and what pilots can teach business owners about interpreting information under pressure.

The goal isn’t to collect every possible piece of data. It is to understand how the right indicators work together well enough to make an informed decision.

  • The Business Lessons an MBA Can’t Teach You | Charbel Louis Karam
    Sep 23 2026

An MBA can teach finance. Private equity can teach you how to analyze a business. Neither fully prepares you for the moment payroll is due, the bank account is nearly empty, and every dollar suddenly matters.

In this From The Ground Up Show: Topics episode, Charbel Louis Karam explains why some of the most valuable business lessons of his career didn’t come from his MBA, finance education, or years in private equity. They came during his first year of running a small business.

After leaving the resources and security of private equity, Charbel went from discussing multimillion-dollar investments to worrying about cash flow, customer payments, payroll—and whether the business could justify buying more coffee cups.

That experience changed how he thinks about business and leadership.

Charbel explains the relationship between sales, costs, profit, and cash—and why booking revenue means little if the company cannot collect and deploy the cash intelligently. He also makes the case that aspiring executives should spend time inside a small business, where limited resources force leaders to understand how a company actually works.

The lesson goes beyond money. As companies grow, leaders can become detached from the details. Charbel argues that capable executives remain curious enough to understand the “fibers” of their organizations—from how employees perform their work to what customers experience when interacting with the business.

The scale of the numbers may change as a company grows. The fundamentals don’t.

  • Why Chasing the Lowest Price Can Cost Your Business | Supplier Relationships Matter | Sheldon Murphy
    Sep 21 2026
The cheapest supplier is not always the most valuable supplier.

Sheldon Murphy explains why strong supplier relationships can be worth sacrificing a little margin—and how years of loyalty and honest communication can protect a contracting business when material prices rise, availability tightens, and the market becomes unpredictable.

In this clip, Sheldon Murphy and Erick Loden discuss:
    • How rapid price increases affected roofing contractors and customers
    • Why supply-chain uncertainty made accurate estimating nearly impossible
    • How trusted suppliers helped contractors navigate volatile material costs
    • Why constantly chasing the lowest price can damage valuable relationships
    • When paying slightly more can produce greater long-term value
    • How loyalty creates goodwill when a contractor truly needs help
    • Why dependable communication provides business owners with peace of mind

Erick also shares how MacArthur Company honored its pricing and worked with his commercial roofing company during the height of the supply-chain crisis—earning more of the company’s business through dependability when it mattered most.

A few dollars saved today may not be worth losing the supplier who will stand behind you tomorrow.

Would you pay slightly more to maintain a trusted supplier relationship? Share your thoughts in the comments.

  • The Hardest Part of Building a $10 Million Roofing Company Isn’t Roofing | Sheldon Murphy
    Sep 19 2026

What is the hardest part of building a $10 million roofing company? According to Sheldon Murphy, it isn’t roofing—it’s people.

After growing TSM Roofing from nothing to more than $10 million in annual revenue, Sheldon explains why recruiting, training, retaining, and leading the right people became the company’s greatest challenge.

In this clip, Sheldon Murphy and Erick Loden discuss:

    • The hardest part of growing a roofing company from zero to $10 million

    • Why hiring and retaining good employees is more difficult than roofing

    • How leaders establish the energy and culture of a growing company

    • Why Sheldon believes in leading from the front

    • TSM Roofing’s transition from W-2 installers to subcontractor crews

    • Why performance and consistency matter more than simply finding available labor

    • How honest, long-term relationships with crews improve the customer experience

    • Why treating subcontractors fairly creates loyalty and sustainable business growth

Sheldon also explains how partnering with a dependable subcontractor and using larger roofing crews helped TSM Roofing complete jobs faster, impress customers, and accelerate its growth.

Building a successful contracting company requires more than mastering the trade. Eventually, growth depends on your ability to attract good people, develop leaders, establish clear expectations, and create relationships that benefit the company, its crews, and its customers.

What has been the most difficult people-related challenge in your business—recruiting, training, retention, or leadership?

  • The $5–$7 Million Revenue “Death Zone” | The Hidden Cost of Business Growth | Sheldon Murphy
    Sep 18 2026
Growing revenue does not always mean making more money.

Sheldon Murphy explains why the $5–$7 million revenue range became the hardest growth stage for TSM Roofing—and why breaking through it required higher overhead, lower margins, less control, and a willingness to temporarily do more work for less profit.

In this clip, Sheldon Murphy and Erick Loden discuss:
    • Why growing businesses encounter difficult revenue ceilings
    • How additional overhead can reduce profits during expansion
    • Why efficiency and control often decline as a company grows
    • What it means to “pay to play” at the next level
    • How low-margin property-management work helped TSM Roofing grow
    • Why keeping dependable crews busy can matter more than maximizing profit on every job
    • When accepting work near cost can protect a company’s long-term capacity
    • How business owners can recognize—and survive—a growth-stage “death zone”

Sometimes the path to a larger, more profitable company requires deliberately accepting lower profits today. The challenge is knowing whether you are investing in sustainable growth—or simply doing more work without getting ahead.

Have you encountered a revenue ceiling in your business? What finally helped you break through it?

  • He Installed the Wrong Roof Color—Then Earned a Five-Star Review | Sheldon Murphy
    Sep 17 2026
Sheldon Murphy made one of the most expensive mistakes a roofing contractor can make: he installed the wrong roof color on an entire house.

Rather than avoiding the homeowners, making excuses, or arguing over the details, Sheldon immediately admitted the mistake and promised to make it right. What could have permanently damaged TSM Roofing’s reputation ultimately produced a five-star Google review, customer referrals, and an important lesson about handling business mistakes.

In this clip, Sheldon Murphy and Erick Loden discuss:
    • How the wrong roofing color was installed on a 50-square house
    • Why business owners sometimes fail to follow their own processes
    • What Sheldon did immediately after discovering the mistake
    • How taking responsibility can turn a bad situation around
    • Why difficult projects can create your most loyal customers
    • How transparency builds credibility and trust
    • Why honest, consultative selling outperforms aggressive sales tactics

Mistakes are inevitable in business. Your reputation is determined by what you do after making one.

  • The Homicide Scene That Triggered PTSD—and the Choice That Changed Everything | Craig Semple
    Sep 14 2026
When homicide detective Craig Semple arrived alone at an isolated farmhouse, he knew only that something terrible had happened inside.

Before entering through the back door, Craig drew his firearm and mentally prepared himself for a potentially deadly confrontation: “

If you’re confronted with a threat, do not hesitate to pull the trigger. You hesitate, you are dead.”The adrenaline helped prepare him physically—but it also heightened every sight, sound and smell he encountered inside. Craig later learned that this intense sensory experience contributed to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In this segment from From The Ground Up Show, Craig describes the homicide scene that triggered his PTSD, the nightmares that followed and the pivotal choice that changed the next eight years of his life: seek professional help or keep his struggle secret.

    He chose silence.

Craig feared losing the career he loved and being perceived as weak. Instead of asking for help, he attempted to outrun PTSD through alcohol, extreme exercise, constant work and increasingly intense investigations. Years of nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, chronic sleep deprivation and adrenaline eventually ended in complete psychological burnout.

    In this conversation:
    • Why Craig entered the homicide scene alone
    • How adrenaline can intensify traumatic memories
    • The recurring nightmares that revealed something was wrong
    • Why Craig concealed his PTSD from everyone around him
    • How fear, identity and pride prevented him from seeking help
    • The difference between social drinking and self-medication
    • Why work and adrenaline became another form of escape
    • How eight years of silence ultimately ended his police career

Craig’s story demonstrates why understanding the warning signs of psychological injury—and asking for help early—can be just as important as preparing for the physical dangers of a high-risk profession.

Content note: This segment contains a non-graphic but intense description of a homicide scene, along with discussion of PTSD and alcohol misuse.
