Few can rival attorney Andy Carpenter's affection for golden retrievers, especially his own beloved Tara. After he astonishes a New Jersey courtroom by successfully appealing another golden's death sentence, Andy discovers that this gentle dog is a key witness to a murder that took place five years before. Andy pushes the boundaries of the law even further as he struggles to free an innocent man by convincing an incredulous jury to take canine testimony seriously. It will take all the tricks Andy's fertile mind can conceive to get to the bottom of a remarkable chain of impersonations and murder, and to save a dog's life - and his own - in the process.

Sintesi dell'editore
His streak of murder case acquittals made him a regular on cable talk shows. His recent $22 million inheritance bought him a dog rescue operation named the Tara Foundation after his own beloved golden retriever. Yet after turning down cases left and right, Andy Carpenter thinks he's facing a midlife crisis.
When a friend, a newspaper owner, calls in a favor and asks him to protect his star reporter, Andy is less than thrilled. His new client is Daniel Cummings, a journalist who is being used as a mouthpiece by a brutal serial killer. Things only get worse when Daniel is discovered near the body of the murderer's latest victim. And after Andy himself starts collecting anonymous death threats, he hears the news every defense lawyer dreads...and moves to within a dangerous keystroke of becoming tomorrow's obituary.
"A fun rollercoaster ride." (Publishers Weekly)
"The real charm of this series lies in the wit of its affable narrator, who is not about to let an ongoing capital trial keep him from walking his beloved golden retriever, betting the point spread, or losing on the stock market. Add to this a likable supporting cast and a low-key love interest, and you have the legal-thriller genre's waggish rejoinder to Anthony Bruno and Janet Evanovich. A sure bet." (Booklist)

Abridged version hurts story
I love the Andy Carpenter character and this book didn't disappoint. HOWEVER, the abridged version made the storyline seem choppy and the flow of events abrupt. At times, an event will take place that seems completely out of context but changes the entire storeline. . . obviously the missing pieces were too important to cut out.

Why abridged?!??
This is a terrific story by an author who is both funny and a fine storyteller. Whoever made the decision to abridge this book needs to find another job.

Curious, enjoyable
I loved this book! Andy Carpenter is so funny. Sometimes I wonder if he is related to my family. What a card! The book is a good mystery and just an overall upbeat read. If you don't want any more tension in your life, just a good time, with a good mystery then you should enjoy this book.

this guy you just wanna be friends with
I actually have listened to the whole series-- very witty and extremely well written. I originally listened to the first one to see if my dad ( he is a widower) would listen to them while he puttered around his house. This is a great series. I love that this character stays "true" through through the entire series. The personality of the main characters pulls you so strongly into the story that you find yourself wishing that you actually know someone like him. The "lawyering" of the story stays light as does the plot so this is kind of an easy listener-- there isn't a lot of blood and guts so if that is what you want- look elsewhere. Overall, you get a funny story with a great dialog and a pretty good plot.

Bury the Lead
Another great mystery by David Rosenfelt. I found it entertaining with an interesting plot and as always, very likeable characters. Love the witty/humorous dialog. I was upset that this audio is only available in an abridged version. Still, a good listen.

Bury the Lead is fun to listen to.
I throughly enjoyed this from start to finish - it helped that I am a golden retriever lover, but also I really enjoyed Andy's sense of humor and the characters in the book. Easy to listen to - keeps your interest - interesting - and funny!

Can't get enough of the Andy Carpenter series
Mr. Rosenfelt is a very entertaining writer and includes his passion for dogs in his works. The Andy Carpenter series are right up there with the most entertaining books I have listened to. At times the humor and wit that is interjected into the book has me laughing out loud. My wife and I have listened to all of the series at least twice. I find the audio books even more entertaining than the paper version due to the excellent reading of Mr. Grover Gardner. To me, the voice inflections and totally believable portrayal of the wisecracking Andy are without the best that they can be. To me, Mr. Gardner IS Andy Carpenter and could not easily be replaced by any other reader. I find myself actually envisioning how Andy and all of the characters look and believe me there are some entertaining and unusual characters in the series. When I listen to these books I get totally engrossed and find myself traveling inside the books covers. I highly recommend this series.

My favorite smart-aleck
After bailing out on my last two books I returned to a sure thing: my favorite smart-aleck lawyer. The plot is good, but what I really enjoy is the characterizations. This recording loses a half-star for truly wretched chapter music that made me want to break things.
