"Il signore del mondo", pubblicato nel 1907 e scritto dal vescovo cattolico inglese Robert Hugh Benson è effettivamente, come da lui stesso affermato nella sua prefazione, per vari aspetti, un libro sconcertante. Anche se il tessuto narrativo non ha lo spessore del capolavoro letterario, è innegabile che quest'opera colpisce perché sembra scritta da qualcuno che (dettagli tecnologici a parte) abbia potuto gettare uno sguardo sul nostro mondo globalizzato, e vedere il progressivo arrendersi dell'umanità al disumano progetto totalitarista e materialista che lo sta fagocitando.

Il titolo originale di questo libro "None Other Gods" indica già che il romanzo è la storia di una conversione. Nel libro si tratta della conversione di un rampollo della nobiltà inglese a una vita in povertà (con un rosario in mano); nella vita dell'autore si tratta della sua conversione dal protestantesimo (fu arcivescovo di Canterbury) al Cattolicesimo.
