Speedy Death (1929) is the debut novel by Gladys Mitchell, introducing her famous detective, the unorthodox psychoanalyst Mrs. Beatrice Bradley, who investigates a murder at a country house party where a woman’s body is found in a bathtub, leading to a series of events and suspects among the guests.

In these two dramas, she puts her extraordinary mind to work investigating cases of disguise, dismemberment, mayhem and murder. In Speedy Death, a country house in the 1920s is rocked by a murder which takes place in a room which is first locked, then later unlocked. As fingers point and the suspects begin to turn on each other, another death occurs. Then The Mystery of a Butcher's Shop sees Mrs Bradley investigating as a headless body is found in the butcher's shop.

A man is writing a book about prison life, using the first-hand stories of previously incarcerated women. Angered by his treatment of her, one of the women burns the manuscript—but she is later discovered murdered in the nearby woods. Detective Inspector Roberts is tasked with uncovering whether there is more to this case than meets the eye.
