Una serie monologhi scritti per la televisione, trasmessi dalla BBC nel 1987 e affidati all'interpretazione di grandi attrici inglesi. E pur essendo, di fatto, una forma a sé, questi monologhi costituiscono la migliore introduzione possibile al mondo di Bennett, dove le leggi della logica prima o poi si incagliano su un dettaglio incongruo, finendo per ritorcersi contro chi cercava di applicarle.

Chi accetterebbe mai di ospitare per diciotto anni nel giardino di casa propria una anziana barbona e il furgone debordante di rifiuti che ne costituisce il domicilio? Oltretutto Miss Shepherd non è una vecchina che susciti tenerezza: è grande e grossa, scontrosa, bislacca, poco incline alla gratitudine. Porta una sottana fatta di stracci per la polvere, occhiali da sole verdi e, a mo’ di cappello, un cestino di paglia ottagonale. Si fa scarrozzare per la città su una sedia a rotelle ed emana un insopportabile fetore. Chi mai accetterebbe una così perturbante prossimità?

Cosa succede quando la regina Elisabetta II scopre casualmente il piacere della lettura? Quando Sua Maestà, per finire in pace un libro, arriva in ritardo a tutti gli appuntamenti ufficiali? Scene esilaranti, descritte con ironia e raffinatezza, che si concludono con un grande colpo di scena finale.

Un appartamento completamente ripulito è quello che si trovano di fronte i signori Ransome al rientro da una serata all'opera; un riazzeramento della vita che porta l'agiato avvocato londinese e la sua pacata signora a reazioni esilaranti e diametralmente opposte. E ancora una volta Bennett si conferma maestro del comico e dell'arte del narrare.
