NBC University Theater initially started in Chicago with a remit to bring adaptations of classic novels, usually Anglo-American, to a radio audience. As a child, Artie Kipps is left in the care of his aunt and uncle, who have a toy shop in New Romney, Kent. His friends are Sid Pornick and his sister Ann, with whom he falls childishly in love. At the age of 14 Artie is apprenticed to Mr Shalford at the Folkestone Drapery Bazaar, and he loses touch with the Pornicks. Life as an apprentice is grim, and he joins an evening class to improve himself. It is run by Helen Washingham, who is beautiful, artistic and socially smart, and Kipps is bedazzled by her.

H.G. Wells' classic science fiction-fantasy story, in which a scientist known only as "The Time Traveller" tells the tale of his journey to the year 802,701 A.D. and beyond, where he witnesses the end of human civilization as we know it, as well as the beginning of the end of the world. This original time-travel story has been copied many times, but never improved upon.

Wells also received four nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Herbert George Wells was born on September 21st, 1866 in Bromley in Kent. He was the youngest of four siblings and his family affectionately knew him as ‘Bertie’. The first few years of his childhood were spent fairly quietly, and Wells didn’t display much literary interest until, in 1874, he accidentally broke his leg and was left to recover in bed, largely entertained by the library of books his father regularly brought him. Through these Wells found he could escape the boredom and misery of his bed and convalescence by exploring the new worlds he encountered in these books.

The War in the Air: And Particularly How Mr. Bert Smallways Fared While It Lasted is a military science fiction novel written by H. G. Wells. The novel was written in four months in 1907, and was serialized and published in 1908 in The Pall Mall Magazine. It is (like many of Wells's works) notable for its prophetic ideas, images, and concepts—particularly the use of aircraft for the purpose of warfare—as well as conceptualizing and anticipating events related to World War I.
