On the eve of the First World War, sociology student Vandyck Jennings goes on an expedition with two of his friends to search for a society rumored to consist only of women. On the way to what they will name “Herland,” Van and his friends ponder the type of women they hope or expect to see when they get there … but they find no fantasies when they arrive. Herland is an all-female, community-driven utopia. Van and his friends are skeptical of a society that doesn’t even need men to procreate, but women and girls who live there have been raised in a world removed the patriarchy of the world.

The Yellow Wallpaper is a powerful and unsettling short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, exploring themes of mental illness, isolation, and the societal expectations placed on women. The story follows a woman confined to a room by her husband, prescribed “rest” as a cure for her mental health. As her confinement deepens, she becomes obsessed with the room’s yellow wallpaper, slowly losing her grip on reality.

Best known for her short story The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, an almost exact contemporary of Edith Wharton, is celebrated as one of America’s foremost feminist writers. This collection includes 28 of her short stories. In addition to The Yellow Wallpaper are The Unexpected (her first published work), The Great Wistaria, An Extinct Angel, The Unnatural Mother and Deserted. These stories range from the subversive to the humorous, and are often imbued with satire and social commentary.

A woman is suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and her husband takes her to a colonial mansion where they can spend the summer. The woman is however closed and isolated in a single room where her nervous depression gets worse with the time. The only thing she sees all day long is a yellow wallpaper which she studies in so many details that she finally finds a creeping woman behind the pattern. The summer is over and the family is about to go home. The husband opens the door to his wife’s room.

The three friends Van, Terry and Jeff are about to embark on a mission which will change their lives forever. They have heard of a place where only women live but they are more skeptics than believers. However they really do find such a place. And all their assumptions and stereotypes are shattered. The society that women have created is working more than perfectly. There are no wars, no domination nor conflicts. The three self-invited guests are however not welcome and are held captive for a few months.
