  • What Secure Leaders Do Differently: Tony Dungy, Brendan Suhr & Catriona Moran
    Oct 8 2026

What do secure leaders do differently?

In this special episode of Uncommon Impact, Nathan Whitaker revisits three conversations from his earlier "The Art of Playing Well" series with longtime NBA coach Brendan Suhr, Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy, and educator Catriona Moran.

Each offers a different lesson on leadership:

    * Brendan Suhr shares what Chuck Daly taught him about listening, ownership, and giving the people you lead a voice.
    * Tony Dungy explains why leadership doesn’t require becoming someone else—and why relationships and authenticity can be strengths rather than liabilities.
    * Catriona Moran talks about the responsibility to mentor others, help them grow, and even prepare them for opportunities that may eventually take them somewhere else.

Three voices. Three lessons. One common thread: secure leaders listen, lead authentically, and develop others.

  • Nathan Whitaker: 5 Things Good Leaders Stop Doing
    Oct 1 2026

Good leadership isn’t only about what we learn to do. Sometimes it’s about what we learn to stop doing.

In this solo episode, Nathan shares five habits good leaders should leave behind: making leadership about themselves, solving every problem, leading from a distance, reacting too quickly, and correcting more than they encourage.

Drawing from The Mentor Leader and lessons from Tony Dungy, Chris Archer, a federal judge Nathan clerked for, and his own experiences, Nathan explores how leaders can create more room for growth, connection, perspective, and encouragement.

A short, practical episode built around one question: What might you need to stop doing to become a better leader?

  • Kris Carter: From Harvard Law to Africa | Faith, Failure & Meaningful Work
    Sep 24 2026

Kris Carter’s career has rarely followed a straight line.

Since graduating from Harvard Law School, he has worked in law, technology, music, microfinance, entrepreneurship, manufacturing in Africa, and venture capital. But behind those career pivots is a deeper story about identity, faith, risk, failure, and learning to follow the next call even when you aren’t sure where it will lead.

Kris shares what difficult leaders taught him about the importance of being “the leader of your own soul,” how he learned not to let a job or boss determine his self-worth, and how his renewed faith changed the way he viewed his work.

We also talk about his years working with microfinance institutions in Africa, his decision to move from lending to creating jobs, and the remarkable story of building Gulu Made with women in northern Uganda—and later helping build another manufacturing operation in Ethiopia.

Kris is also unusually candid about depression, financial uncertainty, comparison, and the persistent voice telling him he hadn’t accomplished enough.

We finish with an unexpected question for a podcast called Uncommon Impact: What if impact isn’t something we should chase at all?

It’s a conversation about calling, gratitude, risk, significance, and learning to be fully present for the life directly in front of you.

  • Jim McKenzie: Leading Change, Casting Vision & Inspiring Hope
    Sep 17 2026

How do you lead people through change without losing them along the way?

Jim McKenzie spent 24 years in education, including more than two decades in leadership, before stepping away from a job he loved without knowing exactly what would come next.

Today, he serves schools and leaders as a consultant, speaker, author, and entrepreneur.

Jim joins Nathan to talk about leading people through significant change, why leaders must provide clarity as well as character, and how an imaginative vision can help people see possibilities beyond “the way we’ve always done it.”

They also discuss Jim’s transition into meaningful work beyond one organization, applying the principles of Unreasonable Hospitality to education, the growing value of human connection, and his belief that one of leadership’s greatest responsibilities is to inspire hope.

  • Nathan Whitaker: Own Your Role
    Sep 10 2026

What’s the difference between accepting your role and owning it?

Nathan shares the unusual story behind The Soul of a Team—a book that began with a rejected 60,000-word manuscript and had to be completely reinvented—and then explores one of its central principles: Own Your Role.

Through the story of Chicago Bulls player Stacey King and Nathan’s own unexpected first assignment with the Jacksonville Jaguars, this episode looks at what happens when the role we’re given isn’t necessarily the role we envisioned.

Owning your role doesn’t mean you have to stay there forever. It means understanding what the team needs from you, embracing it, doing it well, and continuing to grow.

And there’s a larger lesson: when people learn they can trust you in one role, they’re more likely to trust you with another.

  • Andy Janning: Great Stories Aren't Safe
    Sep 3 2026

What makes a story worth telling — and a life worth living?

Andy Janning has spent decades helping organizations and leaders tell better stories. But his own story has increasingly pushed him toward work that is anything but safe.

In this episode of Uncommon Impact, Andy joins Nathan Whitaker to talk about Overdrawn, his new investigative documentary podcast exploring what happens when trust breaks inside an institution and a community; Life Over Debt, an initiative helping cancer patients facing financial hardship; and StoryScore, his work helping mission-driven organizations tell stories that actually connect.

Andy explains why the best stories require risk and surprise, why organizations shouldn't always make themselves the superhero, and why vulnerability and struggle are often what make a story memorable.

He also shares the personal experiences that have shaped his work — including his wife's battle with cancer, the recent loss of his mother, and the growing conviction that life is too short to leave meaningful work unexplored.

As Andy puts it: “Great stories aren’t safe.”

  • Nathan Whitaker: Success vs. Significance: What Are We Really Chasing?
    Aug 20 2026

What does it really mean to make an uncommon impact?

Years ago, Tony Dungy’s college football coach Cal Stoll told him, “Success is uncommon.” That idea eventually helped inspire our book Uncommon—and, years later, the name of this podcast.

But being uncommon isn’t simply about achieving uncommon success.

In this solo episode, I share a lesson I had to learn myself after Quiet Strength became a #1 New York Times bestseller. A friend congratulated me on a talk I’d given about success and significance—and then told me I had gotten my own premise wrong.

    He was right.

Awards, sales, championships and professional accomplishments can all be worth pursuing. But they’re not the same thing as significance.

Ultimately, uncommon impact isn’t about the size of what we accomplish. It’s about the people we build into and whether something—or someone—is better because we were there.
