  • Season 4 Episode 7 - Health & Fitness Vitals
    Nov 5 2026

Are we measuring what really matters when it comes to health and fitness?

We routinely monitor medical vital signs such as blood pressure and heart rate. But what about strength, cardiovascular fitness, body composition, physical function, and exercise habits?

And perhaps more importantly, are we using those measurements to improve outcomes, or simply collecting data?

In Season 4, Episode 7 of the Medical Fitness Podcast, David Flench, Thomas Hammett, and Jeff Young discuss Health & Fitness Vitals and their importance in connecting medicine, rehabilitation, fitness, and public health.

Some of the topics we cover:

    • Which health and fitness measures are most valuable, and why?
    • Why simply asking whether someone strength trains isn't enough.
    • How to determine whether improvements are meaningful.
    • Why fitness professionals and facilities often overlook objective assessments.
    • How tracking outcomes can improve exercise programming, participant engagement, and clinician communication.
    • How data collected at the individual and facility levels can help inform broader public health initiatives.

This episode is also particularly meaningful because it's our final episode together as co-hosts. After several years of conversations, shared experiences, and some outstanding guests, we're taking our work in new directions while continuing our collaboration and commitment to advancing medical fitness.

Whether you're a clinician, fitness professional, healthcare administrator, or someone interested in improving health through exercise, there's plenty to take away from this conversation.

Give it a listen, and thank you to everyone who has followed us along the way!

  • Season 4 Episode 6 - Business Vitals
    Sep 2 2026

In Season 4, Episode 6 of The Medical Fitness Podcast, Thomas Hammett interviews Medical Fitness Association President and CEO David Flench about the business vitals that support a successful, sustainable medical fitness operation. The first of a two-part series, this episode explores how leaders can use meaningful measurements to strengthen performance and support their health-focused mission.

David emphasizes that being busy does not necessarily mean a facility is performing well. Revenue, program participation, and membership numbers need context—including expenses, staffing, capacity, and historical trends—to reveal the full picture.

    Key takeaways include:

    • Build a balanced dashboard. Start with five to ten meaningful metrics covering financial performance, growth, member experience, workforce, and clinical integration.
    • Use benchmarks to ask better questions. Compare performance with both industry benchmarks and your own history, accounting for differences in location, operating model, and organizational priorities.
    • Look beyond membership dues. Personal training, nutrition services, massage, and other offerings can diversify revenue and create opportunities for growth.
    • Evaluate staffing costs alongside productivity. Payroll analysis should include benefits and contract labor. Improving the ratio may require growing revenue and supporting staff effectiveness.
    • Track the clinical referral pathway. Measure referral-to-program participation and program-to-membership conversion separately to identify where engagement can improve.
    • Turn data into action. Measurements should guide decisions, focused improvements, and communication with organizational leaders.

Throughout the conversation, David and Thomas reinforce that meaningful health outcomes and financial sustainability work together. Strong business practices help medical fitness organizations continue serving their communities and demonstrate their value within healthcare.

  • Season 4 Episode 5 - Move More vs Exercise
    Jun 17 2026

🎙️ New Episode: Is “Move More” Enough, or is an Exercise Prescription More Important?

In the latest episode of the Medical Fitness Podcast, we take on one of the most important questions in medical fitness:

Is general physical activity advice enough, or do patients need structured, progressive, individualized exercise prescription to improve health outcomes?

Jeff Young, Thomas Hammett, and David Flench discuss where “move more” fits, where it falls short, and why clinically appropriate exercise programming requires more than vague advice. The conversation covers screening, assessment, initiation, progression, exercise dosing, resistance training, chronic disease, pain, condition-specific recommendations, and how clinicians can identify credible medical fitness referral partners.

One of the key themes in this episode is that “move more” can be an appropriate starting point, especially for individuals who are inactive, hesitant, or early in their readiness for change. But for people managing chronic disease, pain, deconditioning, cancer survivorship, cardiometabolic risk, arthritis, low back pain, or other health concerns, movement needs to become more intentional. That means using a plan, tracking progress, applying the right dose, and progressing safely over time.

We also discuss why condition-specific exercise recommendations can sometimes create unnecessary confusion. While clinical precautions are critical to consider and implement in a safe program, the core principles of effective programming remain remarkably consistent: screen, assess, initiate, and progress. The goal is not to define people by their diagnosis, but to help them improve strength, conditioning, power, muscle, function, confidence, and long-term health.

This episode is especially relevant for clinicians, fitness professionals, rehab providers, health systems, and anyone interested in building a stronger bridge between medicine, rehab, and fitness.
