  • Why Real Friends Don’t Try to Fix You
    Oct 26 2026

When someone you love is hurting, the instinct is to fix it. What if the kindest thing you can do is stay in the room and not say a word?

In this episode, Noel and Jake open with a poem by the 13th-century mystic Hadewijch and the Beguines, the independent medieval women who built their own communities outside the church. From there they explore what real friendship asks of us: witnessing instead of fixing, befriending the stranger inside yourself, and holding both comfort and challenge for the people you love.

  • Why Hospitality Is the Most Underrated Spiritual Practice
    Oct 19 2026

Episode 19. Why Hospitality Is the Most Underrated Spiritual Practice

What if the reason you feel like an outsider has nothing to do with the people around you, and everything to do with how you treat the guest living inside you?

In this episode, Noel and Jake explore hospitality as one of the most concrete spiritual practices there is. It isn’t about dinner parties or manners. It’s about stillness, welcoming your own shadow, and learning to receive love before you try to give it.

  • Why You Can’t Have Joy Without Sorrow
    Oct 12 2026

Episode 18. Joy and Sorrow.Joy and sorrow feel like opposites. This episode asks whether they’re actually the same thing, felt from two sides.Noel and Jake start with a line from Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet that joy and sorrow are inseparable, and follow it through stories, grief and everyday life. They talk about why sorrow is what makes a story worth telling, why we move from reassuring children’s tales to rawer ones as we grow up, and why the best journeys, like The Odyssey, need a trial before the return can feel like joy. From there, they ask what joy actually is and how it differs from happiness. Happiness is contained and passes quickly. Joy erupts, is less self-concerned, and can be felt again through memory. They get into why joy multiplies when it’s shared, why watching other people’s joy can be a gift rather than a source of envy, and Golda Meir’s line: “If you do not know how to weep from your heart, you don’t know how to laugh from your belly.” They also look at whether the anger in so much public debate is really undigested sorrow.Noel shares a personal story about a friend who died young. Looking back, he finds the grief and the joy of that friendship live side by side. The episode closes on why sharing our failures and sorrows, not just our successes, is what builds belonging.Watch the full episode now.FOLLOW AND SUPPORT THE SHOW

  • Why Caring Less About Yourself Makes You Freer
    Oct 5 2026

    Episode 17. Freedom.

Most of us don't feel unfree because of our circumstances. We feel unfree because of the voice running in the background: How am I looking? Do people like me? Did that come out right?

In this episode, Noel and Jake start from a question that sounds simple and isn't: what does freedom actually require? They look at people whose circumstances were as limited as they get. Brian Keenan wrote about finding inner freedom as a hostage in Beirut. Jarvis Masters learned breathing practices in a 10x6 foot cell. A nun on Noel's course worked in South Sudan, and hearing about her made him notice how much his own preoccupations were holding him back. Jake describes people living under siege who stopped worrying about themselves and started worrying about the neighbour on the stairs.

  • 16. Why You'll Never Find Out What You Actually Want (And Why That's Good News)
    Sep 21 2026

Episode 16. Desire.Noel opens with an invitation to "go to the limits of your longing," and from there, this episode moves less like a lecture and more like an accordion, in and out of the same idea from different angles, the way desire itself actually works. We get into why the ultimate desire, underneath all the others, is to be loving and to be loved, and why that's tied to truth even when the truth is inconvenient or badly timed. We talk about the difference between desire and ambition, using Siddhartha's wedding as an example of how nothing is wasted on the way to a goal, even when the original goal never lands. We get into purity of heart as willing one thing, being "sent out beyond recall" once something is made public, and why writing a book (or making a podcast) is often less a plan and more an acquiescence, a yes to something that was already asking to be expressed. It closes with something more personal: a poem Noel wrote for a friend, Judith, and a reflection on the people who've shaped us in ways we don't always recognize until much later, or until they're gone.Watch the full episode now.FOLLOW AND SUPPORT THE SHOWPatreon //https://www.patreon.com/cw/TheHingePodcastSpotify //https://open.spotify.com/show/02iFmPgtRleZjIFHVnrE7EInstagram //https://www.instagram.com/thehingepodcastTiktok //https://www.tiktok.com/@thehingepodcastWrite to us at - thehingepodcast@gmail.comThe Hinge is a conversation between Noel O'Driscoll and Jake Esman — on psychology, spirituality, the examined life, and what it means to be human.#philosophy #spirituality #religion #psychology

  • 15. Farmer & Spiritual Director: Reconnecting With Nature’s Wildness Is The Way Back - Sean Sanford
    Sep 14 2026

There's a reason a farmer and a spiritual director ended up talking about the same thing: comfort might be the least helpful thing you're chasing. In this episode, we sit down with Sean Sanford, Director of Mission for the Office of Ignatian Spirituality and a working farmer in New Jersey, who's spent years watching what happens when people (and land) are left to soften instead of stretch. We get into why modern life is engineered to remove discomfort, and why that might be costing us more than it's saving us — a near-quit run in brutal humidity that turned into his best performance, farming as a daily negotiation with nature instead of control over it, and why chasing an idealized "best self" might be a quieter form of self-harm than we think.

  • 14. Why Successful People Feel Something Is Missing | The Hinge
    Sep 8 2026

There's a strange pattern with high achievers: get them alone, take away the phone, the emails, the meetings, and within a few days something breaks. Not their performance. Their composure. In this episode, we talk about a retreat where CEOs and senior executives were given one rule: no distractions for three or four days. By day three, several of them were lonely, depressed, and confronting a mess in their personal lives that their success had been quietly covering for years. We get into why "busy" is often just insecurity wearing a suit, why achievement can function as a very effective way to avoid feeling anything, and why stripping away the noise doesn't reveal brokenness; it reveals what was already whole underneath it.Write to us at - thehingepodcast@gmail.comThe Hinge is a conversation between Noel O'Driscoll and Jake Esman — on psychology, spirituality, the examined life, and what it means to be human.
