  • Politics vs Escapism: The dualism of Fandom?
    Aug 21 2025

    Hi Fangrrrls,

In this episode of the Fan GRRRL Podcast, we explore the evolving landscape of pop culture, politics and fandom, as we find ourselves either politically charged or politically fatigued, and using our fandom to comfort those emotions.

Even though we said we wouldn't be talking as much about Miss Swiftie (we lied), we focus on Taylor Swift's recent album announcement and how it signals a move into escapism in pop culture compared to the recent political moments of CMAT, Kneecap, Bob Vylan and Hayley Williams.

We discuss the intersection of politics and music, and the role of nostalgia in shaping fan experiences that look for something culturally simpler in a turbulent period.

Can fandom be both political and escapist? The conversation highlights the importance of community support within fandoms, especially in times of political fatigue, and emphasizes the need for a balance between escapism and political engagement in music.

Let us know what you think in the comments!

    Lots of love

    XOXO FanGRRRLs,

    Jess and Dani

We finish up discussing what we are fangrrrling over, from Dani's posh academic book on authenticity and selling out in punk and emo culture to Jess's obsession with V.E. Schwab's toxic lesbian vampires (it's as good as it sounds).

  • Breaking Boundaries: Female Celebrities & Fan Culture
    Aug 29 2024

In Episode 5 of Season 2, hosts Jess and Dani dive deep into the complex and often troubling dynamics between female celebrities and their fanbases. This episode explores the normalization of negative treatment towards women of power in the entertainment industry. Jess and Dani shed light on how this toxic behaviour contributes to further trauma for women like Chappell, Duffy, and other female celebrities who have faced public scrutiny and mistreatment, including by their own fans.

The discussion doesn’t stop at the celebrities themselves. Jess and Dani call for fan girls to take accountability, emphasizing the importance of learning and practising appropriate behaviour that respects the boundaries of the artists they admire. They explore how the industry often manipulates fans, glamorizing parasocial relationships to add social value to an artist's work, and how this can blur the lines between admiration and invasion.

This episode is a powerful call to action, offering educational tools to help fans understand the importance of respecting boundaries while challenging the misogyny and violence that pervade the industry. Jess and Dani also highlight the significance of creating safer, community-driven spaces where female and nonbinary fans can engage without perpetuating harm. Tune in to learn how we can all contribute to a healthier fan culture and support women in the industry with the respect and dignity they deserve.
