📖 The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More & Change the Way You Lead Forever by Michael Bungay Stanier
Episode Summary
What if being a better leader meant talking less and asking better questions?
In this episode, we dig into The Coaching Habit and its deceptively simple challenge: stop jumping in with answers and help people find their own.
We break down the seven questions at the heart of the book, confront our own “Advice Monsters,” and talk about what it actually takes to make coaching a habit instead of something you save for formal one-on-ones. And because this is real life, we also wrestle with the obvious question: Do we really have time to coach our way through every conversation?
The answer might be somewhere between “What’s the real challenge here for you?” and “Please, just tell me what you need.”
In This Episode
- The seven questions that can change the way you coach and lead
- Why “What’s on your mind?” is the book’s Kickstarter Question
- The power — and potential annoyance — of repeatedly asking “And what else?”
- Vanessa’s favorite: “What’s the real challenge here for you?”
- The Strategic Question: “If you’re saying yes to this, what are you saying no to?”
- Why leaders need to tame their Advice Monster
- Coaching as a habit instead of a one-time leadership activity
- The five pieces of building a habit: reason, trigger, micro-habit, practice, and a plan for when you fail
- The 60-second habit formula: identify the trigger, interrupt the old habit, and replace it with a new behavior
- Why giving people context and guardrails can be just as important as asking questions
- The Brené Brown coaching conversation that brought the ideas to life
- Why “What was most useful for you?” can help “interrupt forgetting”
- How these coaching questions might work just as well with our adult children as they do with employees
- Where we struggle with the book: sometimes people really do want your advice — and sometimes you just don't have time for seven questions
- Our Monday Morning takeaways
- Our Billboard Quotes: “Say Less. Ask More.” and “Don’t Be an Advice Monster.”
- Our Gas Tank rating for the book
Our Rating
⛽ Gas Tank: 3/4
We both landed at three-quarters of a tank. The concept is focused and fairly simple — ask more questions and resist the urge to immediately give advice — but putting it into practice is much harder.
What makes this one worth the drive is how immediately usable it is. You leave with actual questions you can put to work Monday morning, whether you're leading a team, working with colleagues, or even talking with your adult kids.
Daily Drive tip: If you're picking up the book, look for the updated edition. Yanet got the longer version with additional real-life examples and conversations — and Vanessa is still bitter about it.
