  • The Brand Blueprint - Founder Interview - They Sold Their House to Build a Coffee Brand — Then Won a Walmart Fast Pass | Mark & Kat Sterling, NuSpira
    Oct 15 2026

What does it actually take to get a Walmart buyer to say yes — and what does it cost at home to get there?

In this episode of The Brand Blueprint, host Dana Ammons sits down with Mark and Kat Sterling, co-founders of NuSpira, for a first on this show: a husband-and-wife founder team.

They were supposed to record a week earlier. They rescheduled because they were presenting at a Walmart Fast Pass event — and walked away with a Fast Pass to Walmart's Road to Open Call in Bentonville.

NuSpira is a functional wellness brand built on mushroom coffee, and the strategy behind it is sharper than the category usually gets. Kat lost her job, and the anxiety that followed brought fatigue, brain fog, and sleeplessness with it. She wanted a natural answer. Mark had spent twenty years in direct sales and had watched a single-mushroom product do $3 billion in eight years. What was on the shelf did not taste good enough to keep buying. So they sold their house, cashed out their 401(k), and built their own.

    In this conversation:

    • why coffee is a delivery system, not just a product
    • "we're not asking people to change their habits — we're asking them to upgrade their ritual"
    • how a married couple divides the work: foundation, framer, finisher
    • what it actually sounds like when your business partner is also your spouse
    • walking the shelves at Walmart and Target to find real white space
    • using AI to build a pitch deck — and why they took it back to real people to validate
    • the toughest feedback they got at SEED SPOT, and why they said thank you
    • the twelve-hour drive to Baltimore and the idea of the slight edge
    • the pricing ladder: trial buy, habit buy, pantry buy
    • why they ask what you'd pay per cup, not per bag
    • the NuSpira portfolio — black coffee, latte, Kyve, and VIBE
    • selling into restaurants, cafés, gyms, and med spas without a barista
    • the goal of 1,000 new doors in 24 months
    • two pieces of closing advice you'll want to write down

  • The Brand Blueprint Market Signal: The Feeling and the Spending Have Split
    Oct 14 2026

Consumer sentiment is near the lowest level ever recorded. Holiday spending is forecast to set a record. Both are true, and most Q4 plans are built on only one of them.

In this Market Signal, Dana Ammons works through what it means when how people feel and what people buy come apart — and what founders in consumer products, retail, beauty, food, and e-commerce should do about it in the next ten weeks.

The episode covers the sentiment data, the spending data that contradicts it, and the one forecast number that resolves the contradiction: during Cyber Week, clothing basics are projected to jump 210% and personal hygiene 150% against a normal September. Those are not gifts. That is a household restocking during the deepest discount window of the year.

From there: the gift-or-restock positioning question, how to answer a 30% discount environment without destroying unit margin, the mobile checkout test worth running today, the Buy Now Pay Later decision, and why AI-driven retail traffic has moved from a future concern to a fourth-quarter revenue issue.

This is a planning episode, not a panic episode.

  • The Brand Blueprint: How Mom Bomb Is Scaling Retail Without Selling Out Its Mission
    Sep 1 2026

Can a founder build a serious consumer-products company, scale it through retail, and protect the mission without giving the wrong investor, board, buyer, or partner control of the wheel?

Heather Roberts, founder and CEO of Mom Bomb, joins Dana Ammons for a candid SEED SPOT Founder Spotlight about the eight-year reality of building a mission-led CPG brand. Mom Bomb sells bath and body products and says 100% of its profits support direct assistance for moms in crisis through its sister nonprofit.

Heather explains how a serious illness and the experience of being unable to care for her six children revealed a broader need: mothers often stabilize the family, but the systems around them rarely stabilize the mother. That insight became the foundation for a business model designed to connect self-care, commerce, and direct support.

The conversation moves from mission to execution. Heather and Dana discuss contract-manufacturer risk, payment terms, sampling, inventory exposure, retail displays, packaging feedback, planograms, sell-through, local advertising, alternative capital, advisory equity, vesting, and the importance of formal legal structure.

You will also hear the story of a retail shipper that was too heavy to deliver and could have created a $50,000 loss, why an award-winning package still failed on shelf, and how Heather learned to treat business as operations and strategy rather than a polished social-media narrative.

This episode is for consumer founders, mission-led entrepreneurs, and anyone trying to grow without losing control of what made the business worth building.

  • The Brand Blueprint: 4 Founder Funding Opportunities Closing Soon — Up to $50K + Retail Access
    Aug 24 2026

This week on Funding Friday, Dana Ammons challenges founders to stop evaluating grants and accelerators by the size of the check alone.

The strongest opportunities can compound cash with retail access, mentorship, product testing, industry credibility, distribution exposure, and relationships that make the next opportunity easier to win.

Dana breaks down four current opportunities: Rooted In Growth, offering four $50,000 grants for qualifying haircare businesses; the 2026 LIFT Beauty Accelerator, offering at least $10,000 per selected brand plus a JCPenney pitch opportunity and in-kind support; the $10,000 Hey Helen Grant for qualifying women-owned businesses; and the Social Shifters Global Innovation Challenge, offering multiple awards of up to $15,000 for young impact founders.

Then Dana introduces a five-part scorecard founders can use to evaluate any funding opportunity: Cash, Access, Capability, Credibility, and Conversion.

The goal is not simply to win money. It is to turn capital into leverage.

00:00 Why the biggest check is not always the best opportunity

01:20 Rooted In Growth: $50K for haircare founders

03:05 LIFT Beauty Accelerator: funding + JCPenney access

05:05 Hey Helen: $10K unrestricted grant for women founders

06:35 Social Shifters: up to $15K for young impact founders

    07:30 The 5-part funding value-stack scorecard

  • The Brand Blueprint: Founder Interview - Why Are Running Shoes So Expensive? Building Swift Running With Pooja Bansal
    Aug 14 2026

Pooja Bansal did not set out to become a footwear founder. Running became her “me time” in her thirties, and the deeper she went into training and coaching, the more one question kept surfacing: why does performance footwear have to be so expensive—and why do everyday runners need multiple pairs just to train safely and effectively?

That frustration became Swift Running, a performance-footwear brand built to make advanced technology more accessible to the runners who make up the majority of the market, not only elite athletes.

In this episode, Pooja joins Dana Ammons to explain the personal problem that became the company, the category white space Swift is pursuing, and the hard operating realities behind launching a shoe brand. They discuss carbon and hybrid plate technology, cushioning and stability, fit and toe-box design, the role of shoe rotation, and how Swift’s APUS, HORUS, CELER, and EQUUS models address different training use cases.

The conversation also covers how Swift is building trust through grassroots activations and demo runs; why product returns can become research and demo inventory; how Pooja thinks about DTC, Amazon, pop-ups, specialty retail, MOQs, size-level forecasting, and wholesale distribution; and why her most powerful marketing strategy is creating customers and coaches who can tell the Swift story in their own words.

Pooja closes with a look at Swift’s next phase, including apparel, a full-carbon race shoe, and trail-running footwear.

  • The Brand Blueprint: Funding Friday: Build Capital Readiness Before You Need It
    Jul 10 2026

Founders, the timing of your capital search matters.

Too many small business owners start looking for funding only after cash flow is tight, inventory is depleted, payroll is due, or the next big opportunity is already creating pressure. By then, the founder is usually operating from scarcity instead of advantage.

In this Funding Friday episode of The Brand Blueprint, Dana Ammons breaks down why funding usually follows readiness, not desperation. This week's highlighted opportunities show how different types of readiness can unlock different types of capital, support, and growth capacity.

    We cover:

    • ShopHand Small Business Boost Grant and why operational readiness matters
    • Verizon Small Business Digital Ready and the funding value of education readiness
    • NASE Growth Grants and why use-of-funds clarity can separate strong applications from weak ones
    • Freed Fellowship and the role of feedback, community, and small grant support
    • How to diagnose whether a funding opportunity is actually designed for your current stage
    • Why non-capital resources may be more valuable than cash in certain seasons of the business

The bigger lesson: do not wait until you are desperate to start preparing for capital. Build the systems, documentation, relationships, and strategic clarity now so that when the right opportunity appears, you are ready to move.
