• 142. Pulling Close, Pushing Away, and Saying Things You Regret | The Disorganized Attachment Communication Pattern
    Oct 21 2026

Have you ever begged for closeness, then felt the urge to run the moment you got it?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble, relationship coach and author of Dance of Attachment, turns to disorganized attachment in week three of the October series on how attachment shows up in the way we communicate. Drawing on the research of Mary Main and Judith Solomon, Jenn unpacks why a body that learned love and fear could come from the same person sends the mixed messages of “come here, go away,” why a calm conversation about the plumber can flip into yelling or total blankness in seconds, and how bracing for betrayal can quietly create the very distance you fear most. She shares the nervous system science of Hebbian learning, the early warning signs that you’re about to go offline, and three gentle scripts that let your partner meet every part of you. Jenn closes with a hopeful reminder that earned security is real, and a body that learned to brace can also learn to rest.

You might want to listen if:

    ● You pull away, pick a fight, or shut down right after getting the closeness you wanted in your relationship
    ● Arguments with your partner flip from calm to yelling or going completely blank and frozen
    ● You suspect you have disorganized attachment or fearful avoidant patterns and feel confused by your own reactions
    ● You expect betrayal, test your partner, or end relationships first so you can’t get hurt
    ● You know your attachment style inside and out but keep repeating the same relationship self-sabotage

  • 141. Shutting Down, Saying "I'm Fine," and Needing Space | The Avoidant Attachment Communication Pattern
    Oct 14 2026

Why does "I'm fine" slip out right when someone you love is trying to get close?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble continues her October series on how each attachment stance shows up in communication, and this week she turns the spotlight on avoidant attachment. She walks through the three ways an avoidant nervous system protects itself in conversation, starting with minimizing phrases like "I'm fine" and "it's whatever," moving into the urge to fix and reach for logic when a partner shares big feelings, and landing on taking space with no return date. Jenn shares Mary Ainsworth's research showing that avoidant little ones looked calm on the outside while their heart rates revealed a stressed body underneath, and she explains why these walls were such a clever strategy for a small person. Listeners walk away with three simple scripts to crack open a shutdown, ask "Do you want me to fix this or just listen?", and take space while naming when they'll come back. Whether you recognize yourself in this pattern or love someone who says "I'm fine" forty times a week, this one is for you.

You might want to listen if:

    • You shut down, go quiet, or say "I'm fine" when a conversation with your partner starts to feel too close
    • You jump into fixing mode or logic when someone you love is upset, and they end up feeling unheard
    • You need space during arguments and want to ask for it without your partner feeling abandoned
    • You think you might have an avoidant attachment style or you're dating an emotionally unavailable partner
    • You feel stuck in the anxious avoidant cycle where one person chases and the other pulls away

  • 140. Over-Apologizing, People Pleasing, and Swallowing Your Needs | The Anxious Attachment Communication Pattern
    Oct 7 2026

Have you ever sent "ok cool" when nothing about it felt cool?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble kicks off a special October series covering all four attachment stances and how each one shows up in the way we communicate, starting with anxious attachment. She draws on John Bowlby's idea of attachment as an alarm system and Sue Johnson's pursue and withdraw dance to break down three patterns. The first is the message underneath the message, where every double text is quietly asking "are we okay?" The second is the hinting and testing that sets a partner up to fail tests he never knew he was taking. The third is the overexplaining and people pleasing that keeps needs swallowed until they spill out over a single dish in the sink. With smoke detectors, fettuccine, and a 4 p.m. sleeve of crackers as her guides, Jenn shares simple scripts for regulating first and speaking second, so one calm sentence can do the work of ten anxious texts.

You might want to listen if:

    • You double text, overthink his reply time, or panic when he doesn't text back
    • You hint at what you want in your relationship and feel hurt when your partner misses it
    • You overexplain, overapologize, or people please to keep the peace
    • You swallow your needs until they explode over something small
    • You want to learn how to communicate with anxious attachment without pushing your partner away

  • 139. Why Do I Keep Sabotaging My Relationships? Anxious Attachment and the Trauma We Never Named | My Conversation with Stacey Uhrig
    Sep 30 2026

Ever watched your partner chat with someone else at a party and felt your whole body scream "he's going to leave me"?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble sits down with Stacey Uhrig, certified trauma care practitioner and founder of Flip Your Mindset, to get to the roots of the relationship patterns that leave smart women asking "why did I do that again?" Stacey shares how she went from speech therapist to trauma-informed coach, and how as kids we assess, address, and adapt to whatever keeps us safe, then carry those adaptations straight into adult love. Together they talk about why a child would rather believe "I'm the problem" than feel how scary it is to depend on a limited parent, how emotional neglect often leaves a deeper mark than the big events we recognize as trauma, and why we keep doing what's familiar even when it hurts us. Stacey also walks through her HURRT Assessment (Healing UnResolved Roots of Trauma), and Jenn opens up about a third grade classroom moment that taught her the deepest wound was having no one hold her pain. It's a warm, candid conversation about trading "what's wrong with me?" for "what happened to me?" and deciding what you're ready to leave behind.

You might want to listen if:

    • You keep self-sabotaging your relationships and can't figure out why
    • Anxious attachment has you spiraling with jealousy or fear that he'll leave
    • You secretly feel unlovable or not enough in your relationship
    • You grew up with emotional neglect and never thought of it as childhood trauma
    • People pleasing runs your life and saying no makes you feel sick to your stomach

  • 138. How to Talk to an Avoidant Partner Who Closes Off (What Warmth Might Do)
    Sep 23 2026

What if the way you show up in the room shapes how open your avoidant partner can be?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble breaks down a 2020 study on how verbal and nonverbal affection land with partners who score higher in attachment avoidance. Jenn walks through what the researchers watched for, including eye contact, smiles, and the glow of someone who loves telling a love story, and shares what happened when the speaker came across warm and when the speaker came across less warm. Warmth and openness moved together, and the pattern showed up a little more strongly for listeners higher in avoidance. She also talks about where sincere words fit into the picture, why warmth may work like proof that love is real, and how tricky genuine warmth becomes when resentment is sitting at the table. Jenn wraps up by exploring what this could mean for the way you love the people in your life, and invites you to try a little extra warmth this week.

You might want to listen if:

    • Your avoidant partner shuts down, withdraws, or goes quiet when conversations turn emotional
    • You are wondering how to talk to an avoidant partner so they feel safer and come back sooner
    • Heartfelt words keep bouncing off your avoidant husband or boyfriend and you want to know what else helps
    • Resentment makes it hard to show warmth toward an emotionally distant partner

  • 137. The Traitor Within: How Childhood Wounds Keep You Stuck in Toxic Relationships | My Conversation with Jessica Anne Pressler, LCSW
    Sep 16 2026

Why do smart, self-aware women keep going back to relationships that hurt them?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble sits down with Jessica Anne Pressler, a Columbia-trained psychotherapist, licensed clinical social worker, and grief counselor with over four decades of experience helping people heal from trauma and destructive relationship patterns. Jessica introduces her concept of the traitor within, the part of us formed in childhood to keep us safe that later shows up as self-sabotage in adult relationships. Jenn and Jessica dig into why intelligent, capable women stay in relationships with narcissists, how childhood coping mechanisms like people pleasing or staying invisible get carried into adulthood, why couples counseling can actually backfire with a narcissistic partner, and what real boundaries look like versus a plea for connection disguised as one. Jessica also shares about her upcoming novel Traitor Within, which follows a protagonist through a cycle of toxic relationships shaped by the same childhood wounds.

You might want to listen if:

    • You keep asking yourself why you stay in relationships that aren't good for you
    • You suspect your partner might be a narcissist and don't know what to do next
    • You want to understand how childhood coping mechanisms show up in adult relationships
    • You're setting boundaries but they keep getting ignored or turned against you
    • You're curious about self-sabotage and where it actually comes from

  • 136. The Trash Pizza Effect: How Your Attachment Style Makes You Accept Less Than You Deserve in Relationships
    Sep 9 2026

Why do you keep accepting behavior you know you don't deserve?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble breaks down the concept of "trash pizza," the idea that when we aren't meeting our own needs, we will accept almost anything from a partner just to avoid feeling that emptiness. Jenn explains how childhood experiences teach us that our needs are too much or not enough, which leads us to stop asking for them and instead expect a partner to meet them for us completely. She walks through her 50% needs bucket concept, showing why filling our own needs halfway is what keeps us from becoming clingy, needy, or devastated by rejection, and shares the pizza analogy that makes the whole idea impossible to forget.

You might want to listen if:

    • You keep accepting behavior in relationships that you know you don't deserve
    • You feel needy, clingy, or anxious when a partner doesn't respond the way you want
    • You struggle to meet your own emotional needs and rely on your partner to fill that gap
    • You find yourself making excuses for how someone treats you
    • You want to understand the connection between childhood attachment wounds and settling for less as an adult

  • 135. Is It Okay for Him to Be Friends With His Ex? | Anxious Attachment Coaching Call with Kaitlin
    Sep 2 2026

Is it okay for your partner to be friends with an ex — or is anxious attachment the one really asking the question?

In this episode of the Speak Honest Podcast, Jenn Noble sits down for a live, unscripted coaching call with her client Kaitlin, who came in wondering whether her partner should be allowed to stay friends with his ex. As the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear the real issue has little to do with the ex at all, and everything to do with hidden conversations, a canceled wedding, and Kaitlin's own anxious preoccupation with fixing what's wrong between them. Jenn walks Kaitlin through the difference between requests and boundaries, why an avoidant partner's fear of engulfment isn't the same as not loving someone, and how to stop outsourcing her security onto a man who can't give her what she needs. It's a raw, real look at what it actually takes to become the secure one in the relationship.

You might want to listen if:

    • You're wondering if it's okay for your partner to stay friends with an ex
    • You find yourself preoccupied with tracking your partner's every move
    • You keep asking "why is he doing this" instead of "what do I want"
    • You're dating or partnered with someone avoidant and don't understand the pullback
    • You struggle to set boundaries without it turning into controlling his behavior
