THE LEGEND OF MOUNT KLEPAC, THE PEAK OF THREE SEAS

In the grim and youthful ridges of the Sudetes, an unquenchable fire burned in days of yore. Behold, in the great forge of the god Svarog, three proud smiths, his apprentices, forged their renown. When their heavy hammers struck the rock as one, a thunderclap shook the foundations of the world. Mother Earth wept, wounded, and from her pure tears, three rushing streams were born.

These three rivers took altogether differing paths. The first set forth unto the north, toward the chill waves where the Baltic Sea doth roar. The second raced afar into the grim expanse known as Morimarusa, the North Sea. The third flowed unto the warm south, straight into the depths we know today as the Black Sea.

Thus did the wondrous Peak of Three Seas become the weeping heart of three salt seas. Yet this crag hath another name as well. Mount Klepacz. When thou layest thine ear to the cold rubble, deep echoes shalt thou hear: clang, clang, clang... 'Tis the quiet wind bounding off the boulders, recalling the rhythm to which the smiths measure out the fates of men. Know ye the secrets the rocky paths conceal, ere the echo of the smiths' hammers falls silent in the mist.

00:00 Of the wondrous mountain that hammers in the Sudetes
00:29 Of the unquenchable forge of the god Svarog
00:53 How the three smiths waged a dispute over their might
01:28 Of the mighty blow and the tears of Mother Earth
02:20 Of the smiths' humility and the name of Klepacz
03:09 How the three rivers flowed into different seas
04:05 Of the Peak of Three Seas and the eternal echo

    THE LEGEND OF RAROG

A quiet hiss in the hearth and a lively dance of sparks. Behold the Slavic Rarog, a mighty spirit of the flames, who guardeth order and purity. In the olden village, where the glowing embers held a soul of their own, this creature would at times reward goodness, and at others chastise human pride.

Hearken to the tale of the goodman Miłorad. This youth found a small black egg and bore it near his heart for nine days. A fiery bird hatched from it, and at first brought him eternal warmth and barns full of grain. Alas, easy gain soon blinded him. When the master began to drink, returning late and forsaking the care of his hut, the quiet embers turned into a grim, raging force.

Thus doth Slavic mythology vividly teach humility before the forces of nature. Behold how the angered Rarog grows into a great, ruinous vortex of flames. Can a man tame a power that giveth more than he himself can revere? Mark ye well, that greed turneth all wealth to smoke, and true riches demand care and a pure heart.

00:00 Of the living fire and the secret spirit
00:53 How Miłorad found the black egg in the dew
01:49 Of the hatching of the fiery bird
02:52 Of great bounty and the peasant's sloth
03:44 How Rarog grew in his wrath
05:10 Of the final night and the mighty blaze
05:44 Of a warning for those to come

THE LEGEND OF SWAĆBA, THE SLAVIC WEDDING

A living fire of oak doth burn amidst the night, and a red thread binds the hands of the young. Hearken unto what the Slavic swaćba was. A mystic rite of passage, an ancient ritual of holy nuptials, that bound human souls, destiny, and two kindreds together.

The trial of fire likewise awaited them, and the shared leap through the flames decreed their harmony and bounty. THE LEGEND OF POLEVIK

Where the wind ruffles the ripe wheat, an uncommon guardian of the harvest hath kept watch for ages. 'Tis the mighty Polevik, the ancient Slavic protector of fields and toiling peasants. Hearken then to a tale straight from the sunlit boundary of an olden village, which breathes life into the ancient world of folk belief.

Behold how this mythical being doth change its shape with the passing of the seasons. In spring, 'tis as tiny as a field mouse, whilst in the height of ripe summer, it grows into a towering man wearing a green cap of thistle. Discover likewise the secret of the sheaf of grain bound with a red ribbon, which allowed the spirit to survive the bitter winter.

Hearken to the legend of how the wise peasant Sambor reaped the most bountiful harvest, leaving bread and an egg upon the boundary. Lend your ears to the grim fate that befell the young idler, Miłosz. For he preferred to lounge in the shade, rather than grasp the scythe. The field demon knew no mercy for sluggards, casting thick hexes and dread upon them. Such is the wisdom written in ancient tradition, that reverence for nature returns unto man a hundredfold. Ancient myths teach us humility before the earth and the fruits of hard labor.

    THE LEGEND OF BALD MOUNTAIN

A great peak of stone, breathing with the wind and piercing the clouds. If this ancient Bald Mountain (Łysa Góra) were at last to speak with a human voice, what would it say? If nature herself were given tongue, the tale of the mountain that hath borne many names would reveal a truth older than the spoken word.

Did the hard rocks of the summit truly never bear a forest? How did the early Slavs bring fire unto this place and raise mighty walls of stone? 'Twas here that Perun himself, wise Svetovit, and Rod received their worship, when the folk sang hymns unto the gods with grand reverence. Alas, as centuries passed, times did change. Monks trod cautiously upon the peak, and the primeval Bald Mountain became the Holy Cross, whilst earnest pagan rites were cast into the dark.

Hearken whence the famed witches' sabbath came to be. The mountain spirit speaketh plainly: the summit never saw a witch, for 'twas but human dread that birthed such fables. The true secrets dwell only within the ancient circles and the silent fields of naked stone. 'Tis old fears that beguile our eyes, making us seek darkness where there is none. Such is the tale one may hear upon the whisper of the wind along the Świętokrzyskie trails.

00:00 Of a mountain older than human memory
00:32 How the mountain arose from earth and stone
01:12 Of the first guidepost in the wildwood
01:38 How the Slavs worshipped their gods here
03:15 Of the monks' arrival and the giving of a new name

THE LEGEND OF SIGRID THE HAUGHTY

Thus doth the ancient history of the Slavs entwine with the tempestuous fates of the Kings of the North. 'Tis a tale of Sigrid, the haughty daughter of Duke Mieszko, who loved freedom above all else. The proud princess, ere she became wife and mother of kings, did spurn the wooing of greedy men, treating them to cruel fire. By the name of Sigrid Storråda, that is, the Haughty, did they then proclaim her.

This woman did hold fidelity to her forebears higher than foreign crowns and gold. When the King of the Norwegians, Olaf, durst raise his hand against Piast blood and struck her across the face, he knew not at all that this blow would swiftly return unto him as a doomful wave.

Sigrid did strike a wise alliance with the Danish ruler Sven, that in a great sea battle she might send her foe unto the murky depths. Yet this tale is not merely of bloody vengeance, but a teaching of cool reason. For the princess did bring peace unto distant lands, made the laws as one, and gave bread unto orphans. For what is justice, when it heedeth not mercy? Listen well to this, that whoso turneth wrath into prudence, doth bring great peace for generations to come.

00:00 Of the daughter of Piast and the mother of kings
00:41 How she did burn her suitors with fire in the hall
01:22 Of Olaf's blow and the unyielding faith of her forebears
01:41 Of the alliance with Sven and the birth of kings
02:27 How the sea waves took vengeance for the blow
03:17 Of her wise rule and care for the folk
03:42 Of prudent words ere her passing
