THE LEGEND OF RAROG
A quiet hiss in the hearth and a lively dance of sparks. Behold the Slavic Rarog, a mighty spirit of the flames, who guardeth order and purity. In the olden village, where the glowing embers held a soul of their own, this creature would at times reward goodness, and at others chastise human pride.
Hearken to the tale of the goodman Miłorad. This youth found a small black egg and bore it near his heart for nine days. A fiery bird hatched from it, and at first brought him eternal warmth and barns full of grain. Alas, easy gain soon blinded him. When the master began to drink, returning late and forsaking the care of his hut, the quiet embers turned into a grim, raging force.
Thus doth Slavic mythology vividly teach humility before the forces of nature. Behold how the angered Rarog grows into a great, ruinous vortex of flames. Can a man tame a power that giveth more than he himself can revere? Mark ye well, that greed turneth all wealth to smoke, and true riches demand care and a pure heart.
