The Positive Leadership Academy podcast is hosted by Javier Llerena, executive coach, founder of Re-Invent Consulting, and author of Recoded. After 30 years leading sales organizations and coaching leaders for more than 4,500 hours, Javier has one conviction: most of what holds leaders back is learned, and anything learned can be recoded. Each episode brings you practical ways to lead with more trust and less control, conversations with leaders who have done the work, and ideas drawn straight from the book. If you lead people, this show is for you.Javier Llerena Scienze sociali
  • Look Where You Want to Go: MindShifting for Leaders — with Mitch Weisburgh
    Oct 27 2026
Send us Fan MailWhat if the biggest thing holding you back as a leader isn’t a missing skill, book, or framework, but the story your mind is telling you right now? In this episode I sit down with Mitch Weisburgh, educator, author, and creator of MindShifting, to talk about how leaders get pulled into survival mode and how to get back to the resourceful, curious part of the brain that actually solves problems.Mitch shares the traffic jam that taught him his reality was “all in his head,” the one question that unlocked a stuck manager overnight, and the moment his niece told him to stop staring at the gully and look at the tree. We get into the signs you’re in survival brain (including being absolutely certain), why conflict on a team is a signal and not a failure, why your people may not tell you when you’re wrong, and the one question Mitch says every leader should ask this week. I also share how a few honest (and not-so-honest) readers shaped my book Recoded.About the guestMitch Weisburgh is an educator, author, and speaker who has spent decades helping people unlock their potential. He co-founded Academic Business Advisors in 2005 to help schools adopt educational technology, and since 2018 he has focused on MindShifting: practical ways to move out of fear, blame, and self-doubt and into three capacities, resourcefulness, resilience, and collaboration. He is the author of MindShifting: Stop Your Brain from Sabotaging Your Happiness and Success and MindShifting: Conflict and Collaboration, and he teaches MindShifting courses for educators and organizations. In this episode(00:01) Welcome, and why complaining isn’t positive leadership(01:05) Surround yourself with people who lift you up(01:32) Why mindset, not another skill or book, is what holds leaders back(02:33) The traffic jam, the big meeting, and “it’s all in my head”(04:27) The manager who wanted to lower the bar, and the question that opened her mind(06:18) From ed tech to mindset: the two-day workshop that got 70 students cheering(09:16) “Who’s saying that?” The narrative your mind tells you(10:17) “Watch me”: my own fuel after arriving in the U.S. in 1984(10:47) The programming we inherit from family and the past(11:40) Self-talk that closes you down vs. questions that open you up(12:47) Look at the tree, not the gully: the horseback lesson(15:03) Trauma-informed coaching and what triggers leaders under pressure(16:33) How to recognize survival mode: body signals, certainty, and fitting in with the crowd(19:40) My dad’s advice: read the magazines you disagree with(20:10) The emotion in your driveway: check yourself before you get in the car(21:01) Giving stress hormones time to clear(21:56) Conflict as an opportunity, and Mitch’s book on conflict and collaboration(23:55) What to do when a team is stuck: the five conflict styles and a shared vocabulary(26:11) “Why don’t you fire 123 of them?” Conflict advice from a five-year-old(28:00) If everyone agreed with you, what would you learn?(28:39) The beta readers who proofread my book instead of telling me the truth(29:44) Why your team won’t tell you you’re wrong: assertive vs. aggressive(31:02) The micro step: “From where I am now, what would I love to happen?”(32:30) Free Conversation Circles for teams(33:50) Why reading the book isn’t enough: humans are social learners(37:00) Recoded and unlearning the leadership you inheritedLines worth remembering“When you look at where you want to go, that’s where you’re going to end up.” — Mitch, retelling his niece’s advice“If we’re absolutely sure, that’s a signal that we’re in our survival brain.” — Mitch“That change brings you to possibility instead of blame and anger.” — Mitch“Humans are social learners and we have to try things out.” — Mitch“My philosophy is that your mind is constantly lying to you.” — JavierLinks & resourcesMitch WeisburghWebsite: https://mindshiftingwithmitch.org/Free Conversation Circles: https://mindshiftingwithmitch.org/conversationcirclesWhat’s Your Conflict Style (free guide): https://mindshiftingwithmitch.org/guide_conflict_stylesBooks on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Mitch-Weisburgh/author/B0DQ69TQPZLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mweisburgh/Newsletter: https://mweisburgh.substack.com/Javier Llerena & the Positive Leadership Academy📕 Recoded, out now: https://amzn.to/4rOsCOtApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/positive-leadership-academy-inspires-guides-and/id1686839278Spotify: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/positiveleadership-en/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@mrjavierllerenaPodcast page: https://positive-leadership-academy.podcastpage.io/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/javierllerenaRe-Invent Consulting: https://re-invent.consulting/Want to be a guest on Positive Leadership Academy – Inspires, Guides and Transforms? • Why Your Team Walks the Other Way, with Maria Alessandri
    Oct 21 2026
Send us Fan MailWhat does it say about your leadership when the people you lead walk the other way as you come in?On this episode I sit down with Maria Alessandri, founder of the Horse and People Project and author of Ask Like You Mean It. Maria left a corporate career in Washington, DC, after her horses showed her that everything she’d been taught about control was making them run from her. Today she works mostly with rescue horses, on the ground with no riding, to teach leaders, parents and teams how trust actually gets built. We talk about releasing the pressure, why you shouldn’t break your own momentum, and the difference between being clear and being mean. Maria shares the teenage son who backed quietly out of the kitchen, the horse named Rocky who wouldn’t leave the field, the boss whose horse wouldn’t come near him, and the middle-school teacher who changed her classroom in five minutes. I share what an Arabian named Bravo taught me about the control I inherited, which is a big part of my book Recoded.About Maria AlessandriMaria is the founder of the Horse and People Project, a speaker, and the author of Ask Like You Mean It. • “Nothing leaves this team without going through me”: why I wrote Recoded
    Oct 14 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

In 2005 I ran a sales organization with one rule: nothing left my team without going through me. Our performance reviews were exceptional, and I was sure that was leadership. It took me years to see what it cost. My people stopped bringing me ideas. They brought me drafts and waited.

In this solo episode I tell the story behind my new book, Recoded. Every one of us leads with a code we didn’t write. It comes from a parent, a first boss, or the culture we grew up in, and for many of us it says control the outcome and be the hero. I share where my own code came from, how two months with an Arabian horse named Bravo started to change it, and the habit I’m working on this week.

If you got promoted for being good at the work and your team has gone quiet, this one is for you. You’ll leave with one small thing to try before the next episode.

Recoded is out now in paperback, and every copy comes with the Recoded Action Pack.
