Every night, I hear loud music coming from upstairs. For weeks, I tried to ignore

it, but yesterday I decided to go up and knock on the door.A woman in a pink robe and slippers answered.

“Sorry to bother you… it’s about the noise.”

    She smiled, embarrassed.

“Oh, I was listening to fado. I usually feel lonely at night…”

We talked for a few minutes. I found out she lives alone and music is her

    company.

In the end, she turned down the volume. And I promised to visit her now and

    then for a chat.

Sometimes, noise comes from those who need to be heard the most.

    EN:

It was a grey day — inside and out.

I walked into a café, ordered a galão, and sat quietly.

When I went to pay, the cashier smiled and said:

“I really like your coat. It suits you.”I was speechless. It wasn’t about the coat or the color. It was the gesture.

That simple sentence, said without expecting anything in return, warmed me

    more than the coffee.

I walked out smiling. And I spent the rest of the day noticing others, trying to do

    the same.

A genuine compliment can change more than the moment: it can change your

    whole mood.

    EN:

I was invited to a family lunch. I thought it would last one hour. But no. It lasted three hours.

First, soup. Then, meat. Finally, dessert and coffee. Between each course, there were lively conversations, debates about football, and of course, lots of insistence to eat more.

“Have a little more!” — says my friend’s grandmother with a smile.

    “I’m full!” — I reply, almost breathless.

But my plate kept getting mysteriously refilled. The concept of “full” doesn’t seem to exist at Portuguese lunches. I tried to politely refuse, but I’d hear:

“Oh, but there’s still a little dessert to finish!”

And so, I accepted my fate and ate another slice of cake. I learned that “just a little bit more” can mean another half hour at the table.

    EN:

Although there are more and more people in cities, loneliness continues to

    grow.

Many live surrounded by others but feel isolated.

Urban lifestyles — with long hours, long commutes, and digital connections —

    make genuine human contact difficult.

Studies indicate that prolonged loneliness can have effects similar to smoking

    or a sedentary lifestyle.

It affects the immune system, mental health, and cognitive performance.

Solutions include creating more community spaces, valuing offline interaction,

    and promoting local support networks.

The modern city must relearn how to be a place of connection — not just of

    transit.
