  • Connecting the Dots: using behavioral and cognitive psychology to support teens with IEMs - It’s a social world
    Nov 18 2020
This is the second of a 3 part series about the teenage brain, its development and how to best support our teens  with inborn errors of metabolism.

On episode 2 we will focus on self-identity and the social world.  Teens are building their self-identity and much of teen brain power is answering the question ‘who am I?” They might re-consider their condition and what it means to them. They might re-experience the first impact of their diagnosis on a more complex and painful level, resulting in un-resolved feelings.    We will discuss ways to intervene based on the science and from clinical experience.

  • Connecting the Dots: using behavioral and cognitive psychology to support teens with IEMs - Getting to know the teenage brain

This is the first in a 3 part series where we will learn about the teenage brain, its development and how to best support our teens  with inborn errors of metabolism during this critical period.

In this first episode, our experts will discuss some broad concepts from the field of neuroscience - brain development and brain functioning and implications for how to be with teens. They will introduce the key developmental tasks of the teen years and some important skills teens need to become independent from their parents.   We will also address how this knowledge can be applied to the management of IEMs through the discussion of case studies.
