But if I go, I will send him to you.” Jesus prepared His disciples for life without Him,For 3 years they had known:His companionshipHis protectionHis teachingHis affectionHis physical presence He tells them they will not be abandoned. He will send another counselorThe Christian life is not Jesus giving instructions and then leaving us to go figure it out. As disciples of Christ we do not live from abandonmentWe live from the promise:Christ is with us through His Spirit. The Holy Spirit Is a Person John 14:16-17 “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,[a] to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be[b] in you. The Spirit is not an impersonal force or vague spiritual energy. The Spirit:SpeaksLeadsTeachesGives directionBear witnessCan be resistedCan be grieved The Spirit is someone we can relate to, not something we manipulate If the Spirit is an “it”, we can keep Him at a distanceIf the Spirit is a Person, we have to decide how we are going to respond to HimAm I responsive to the Spirit’s presence and direction? The Holy Spirit Is “Another Like Jesus” John 14:16 “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,[a] to be with you forever,” The Spirit is not a replacement unrelated to JesusThe Spirit carries forward the presence and ministry of JesusTo be in Christ is to be in the Spirit. To be indwelt by Christ is to be indwelt by the Spirit. The Spirit carries the personality and presence of Jesus. The Spirit’s ministry is not separate from Christ. The Spirit does not draw us away from Jesus. He makes Jesus present to us. The Spirit Is With Us Always Matthew 28:20 “20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Jesus’ human physical presence was limited. If He was in one city, He could not physically be in another. The Spirit removes those limitations“I am with you always” As a disciple we never face trials alone:TemptationSufferingUncertainty ObedienceMission Spiritual maturity includes learning to live with an awareness of Christ’s continual presence. The Spirit Dwells in Us John 14:16-17 ““16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,[a] to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be[b] in you.” The Spirit does not merely come alongside believers. He lives within us.Christ has been with the disciplesThe Spirit would be in them. We can be a dwelling place of GodThe presence of God is no longer associated only with a sacred building or holy place. The believer becomes a sacred space. We can live with the understanding that our life belongs to God because God Himself dwells within me. The Spirit Makes Us Holy Ephesians 5:18-20 “18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” 1 Peter 1:15-16 “15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” The Holy Spirit is not given to just comfort us. He is also given to transform us. The Holy Spirit reveals a “Holy Discomfort” or a “Holy Discontent” with anything in us that is inconsistent with God’s character. The Spirit:ConvictsCleansesReshapesPurifiesLeads us toward holiness His work may comfort us, but it also may disturb us. He refuses to leave us unchanged. Many people want the Spirit’s ...

  • Dominick, Justification doesn't make us Bonded, but Adopted.

Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” Adoption is the highest privilege of the Christian life. To know cry out “Abba, Father”We are no longer slaves living in fearWe are sons and daughters living within relationship A person can believe:God tolerates meGod has legally pardoned meGod is no longer angry All this while never experiencing the deeper reality of:God wants me as His child As we grow deeper in our relationship with God we no longer see him as Judge or King, but as Father Our Experience of Earthly Fathers Can Shape How We See God Our earliest understanding of fatherhood often influences our understanding of GodFor some, an earthly father may have modeled:AffectionProtectionFaithfulnessWisdomPresence For others, it may be:DistanceDisappointmentHarshnessAbsenceFailure God is not limited by the failures of our earthly fathersGod defines perfect fatherhood This matters because sometimes we project human weakness onto God:“My father was distant, so God must be distant”“My father was hard to please, so God must be hard to please”My father abandoned me, so eventually God will too” We need to allow God to correct distorted assumptions about what a father is Abba, Means Intimacy, Trust, and Dependence Rom. 8:15-16; Mark 14:36 “36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Jesus himself called God “Abba, Father” not “Daddy”This is a very intimate way of addressing God:TrustDependenceSecurityFamiliarityRelationship Jesus used this language in Gethsemane, at one of the darkest moments of His earthly life. Under unbearable pressure, Jesus approached the Father from a place of intimacyThrough the Holy Spirit, believers are invited into that same relationshipThe Christian life is more than knowing truths about God. We learn to pray as a child speaking to a Father, not as an employee presenting a report to a supervisor. In Christ, We Share in the Father’s Delight Mark 1:11 “1 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;[a] with you I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17 “17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son,[a] with whom I am well pleased.” At Jesus’ baptism, the Father declares His love and pleasure in the Son. “You are my Son. I love you. I am pleased with you. Because believers are adopted through Christ, we are welcomed into the relationship the Son enjoys with the Father. We become recipients of the Father’s affection. We can know ourselves as:The object of God’s loveThe focus of His careThe recipients of His delightFull members of His family This is an important distinction. It is more than God forgives me. Its God delights in me. Adoption goes beyond tolerance. God welcomes us with affectionWe learn to live from belovedness instead of constantly performing for approval. We Were Spiritual Orphans, but Christ Brought Us Home Gal. 4:4-7 “4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” Jesus is the natural son of the Father. We become sons and daughters through adoptionSin made humanity spiritual orphans and separated us from the FatherChrist came to restore that relationship The Son of God became human so that human beings could become children of God.(CS Lewis) Through Christ’s sacrifice:Sin is forgivenThe relationship is restoredThe Spirit enters our lifeWe cry “Abba, Father”We are welcomed home This is the story of God acting in Christ to bring His list children homeWe stop living with an orphan mentalityWe no longer need to scramble for identity, security or belonging as though we are alone. We have a Father Adoption Means We Are Heirs Rom. 8:17 “17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” Paul says believers are:Heirs of GodCo-heris with Christ We are promised:Resurrection bodiesRenewed creationFreedom from deathFreedom from sufferingEternal fellowship with God’s family The greatest inheritance is God ...

  • Christ's Justification got the Monkey of sin off our Shoulder

Topic: Justification Whiskey Review: Monkey Shoulder the Original Check out our Substack: Manhood Neat Podcast Follow us on all your podcast platforms and: Instagram: @manhoodneat X: Manhood Neat (@ManhoodNeat) / X Youtube: Manhood, Neat Podcast - YouTube Reach out: manhood.neat@gmail.com Show Notes: Justification Salvation Justification - Sanctification - Glorification How are the benefits of the cross transferred into our lives or how does that saving work become ours?We are declared right before God by faith in Jesus Christ alone. Justification by faith. We do not achieve righteousness. We receive it. The Performance Reward System Eph. 2:8-10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” We are trained from early life to think about how performance produces reward. From childhood on we learn:Behave well and receive praiseAchieve and receive recognitionFail and experience disappointmentPerform and prove your worth This framework has quietly shaped how we approach God. Eph 2 destroys that logic. Its Salvation:By graceThrough faithNot from ourselvesNot by worksGood works matter, but they come after Salvation, not before it. They are the evidence of salvation and part of sanctification, not the basis. Have I done enough? No. Christ has. The only thing we bring to our salvation is the sin that requires itA disciple obeys from acceptance, not for acceptance. The Righteousness of God: Just and Justifier Rom. 3:21-26 “But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in[a] Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[b] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.” “The righteousness of God” is often misunderstood. “God is righteous and we are sinful”This drives us into religious performance, trying to please a God that we fear we can never please.God feels:Difficult to pleasePerpetually disappointedConstantly evaluatingAlways waiting for improvement God is not only just, He is also the One who justifies. He gives us righteousness. Our confidence must lie in Christ’s completed work, not in our ability to satisfy. God does not look at sinners and pretend no crime occurred. We are “guilty as charged”And immediately we are told “ You are free. The payment has been made” Justice has not been ignored. It has been satisfied. Forgiveness/Justification is not divine denial. God remains perfectly just while also justifying sinners. Redemption and Propitiation: Justice Meets Mercy Rom. 3:24-25 “24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,[a] through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—” Redemption is the price paid to set someone free.Christ’s life becomes the ransom price for ours. Propitiation is the satisfaction of righteous anger. We do not provide the sacrifice to satisfy God.The Father gave the Son Christ bears the penaltyJustice is satisfiedMercy is extended The cross says two things at once:Sin is more serious than we want to believeGod loves us more deeply than we dare to imagine. Faith in Jesus Christ Rom. 3: 21-31 “21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.27 Where, then, is boasting? It is ...
