Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” Adoption is the highest privilege of the Christian life. To know cry out “Abba, Father”We are no longer slaves living in fearWe are sons and daughters living within relationship A person can believe:God tolerates meGod has legally pardoned meGod is no longer angry All this while never experiencing the deeper reality of:God wants me as His child As we grow deeper in our relationship with God we no longer see him as Judge or King, but as Father Our Experience of Earthly Fathers Can Shape How We See God Our earliest understanding of fatherhood often influences our understanding of GodFor some, an earthly father may have modeled:AffectionProtectionFaithfulnessWisdomPresence For others, it may be:DistanceDisappointmentHarshnessAbsenceFailure God is not limited by the failures of our earthly fathersGod defines perfect fatherhood This matters because sometimes we project human weakness onto God:“My father was distant, so God must be distant”“My father was hard to please, so God must be hard to please”My father abandoned me, so eventually God will too” We need to allow God to correct distorted assumptions about what a father is Abba, Means Intimacy, Trust, and Dependence Rom. 8:15-16; Mark 14:36 “36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Jesus himself called God “Abba, Father” not “Daddy”This is a very intimate way of addressing God:TrustDependenceSecurityFamiliarityRelationship Jesus used this language in Gethsemane, at one of the darkest moments of His earthly life. Under unbearable pressure, Jesus approached the Father from a place of intimacyThrough the Holy Spirit, believers are invited into that same relationshipThe Christian life is more than knowing truths about God. We learn to pray as a child speaking to a Father, not as an employee presenting a report to a supervisor. In Christ, We Share in the Father’s Delight Mark 1:11 “1 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son;[a] with you I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17 “17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son,[a] with whom I am well pleased.” At Jesus’ baptism, the Father declares His love and pleasure in the Son. “You are my Son. I love you. I am pleased with you. Because believers are adopted through Christ, we are welcomed into the relationship the Son enjoys with the Father. We become recipients of the Father’s affection. We can know ourselves as:The object of God’s loveThe focus of His careThe recipients of His delightFull members of His family This is an important distinction. It is more than God forgives me. Its God delights in me. Adoption goes beyond tolerance. God welcomes us with affectionWe learn to live from belovedness instead of constantly performing for approval. We Were Spiritual Orphans, but Christ Brought Us Home Gal. 4:4-7 “4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” Jesus is the natural son of the Father. We become sons and daughters through adoptionSin made humanity spiritual orphans and separated us from the FatherChrist came to restore that relationship The Son of God became human so that human beings could become children of God.(CS Lewis) Through Christ’s sacrifice:Sin is forgivenThe relationship is restoredThe Spirit enters our lifeWe cry “Abba, Father”We are welcomed home This is the story of God acting in Christ to bring His list children homeWe stop living with an orphan mentalityWe no longer need to scramble for identity, security or belonging as though we are alone. We have a Father Adoption Means We Are Heirs Rom. 8:17 “17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” Paul says believers are:Heirs of GodCo-heris with Christ We are promised:Resurrection bodiesRenewed creationFreedom from deathFreedom from sufferingEternal fellowship with God’s family The greatest inheritance is God ...
