He received it, guarded it, and passed it on intact: Christ died for our sins. Christ was buried. Christ was raised on the third day. The gospel can easily be reduced to: Moral improvementReligious inspiration“A better life”General spirituality. Christianity stands or falls on historical claims about Jesus. A disciple does not merely treasure the gospel privately. A disciple guards it and passes it on faithfully. Jesus Alone Could Mediate Between God and Humanity 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” Hebrews 7:27-28 “He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son[a] from the Father, full of grace and truth.” Jesus was uniquely qualified to redeem humanity because He was both fully divine and fully human. As a man, He could represent us. As God, He could bear the full weight of sin and provide a sufficient sacrifice. As the sinless One, He did not need atonement for His own guilt, He could offer Himself once for all. A human savior could sympathize but could not fully save. A distant deity could judge but could not stand in humanity’s place. In Jesus, God comes near without ceasing to be God. Jesus’ Own Claims Reveal His Divine Identity John 6:35 “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” John 8:12 “Again Jesus spoke to them saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:58 “Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” John 11:25 “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, through he die, yet shall he live.” John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus did not merely point toward truth. He pointed to Himself. He said: I am the bread of lifeI am the light of the worldI am the resurrection and the lifeI am the way, the truth and the life His use of “I AM” identified Him with the divine name revealed to Moses. His preferred title, “Son of Man,” also points to Daniel’s vision of a heavenly ruler who receives authority, glory and worship. Jesus cannot be reduced to a wise teacher His claim forces a decisionEither He is who He said He is, or His words make little sense. Christ Died as Our Substitute 2 Cor. 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,”Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” The center of redemption is substitutionJesus took upon Himself what belonged to us: GuiltJudgementSufferingDeath And through Him we receive what belongs to Him: RighteousnessForgivenessMercyLife Paul summarizes the exchange by saying that the sinless Christ became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God. The cross is not just an example of sacrificial love. It is an actual exchange. Christ does not simply feel our pain. He bears our penalty. The Lamb of God Satisfies Justice and Purchases Mercy Exodus 12(passover), Leviticus 16(day of atonement)1 Cor. 5:7 “Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said,”Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin ...
