• 88: My Adult Child Says I'm Toxic - What Did I Do Wrong?
    Nov 4 2026

Few things hurt more than hearing your own adult child describe you as toxic. You spent years loving, protecting, and doing what you believed was best for them. Now you’re left questioning yourself, replaying conversations, and wondering how the two of you could see the same relationship so differently.

It’s a painful accusation, especially when it comes from someone you love so deeply.

In this episode of Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace, we explore how to move beyond the initial hurt and begin looking at the situation with greater clarity.

    We’ll talk about:

    • Acknowledging the pain without allowing one label to define who you are.
    • Considering different perspectives and understanding how two people can experience the same relationship differently.
    • Recognizing defensiveness and why our natural desire to explain or justify ourselves can keep us from seeing the bigger picture.
    • Reframing your perspective by allowing your emotions to settle before examining what happened with fresh eyes.
    • Finding a balance between responsibility and self-blame so you can acknowledge possible mistakes without questioning your worth.

I’ll also share three reflection questions to help you think through your relationship with greater honesty, compassion, and understanding.

Being called toxic doesn’t have to become your identity. You can love your child, acknowledge that you may have made mistakes, and still believe you are worthy of love and respect.

You don’t have to choose between taking responsibility and finding peace.

  • 87: My Adult Child Won't Speak to Me - How Do I Move Forward
    Oct 27 2026

You raised your child, loved them, worried about them, and did what you thought was best. Now that same child doesn’t want you in their life. Whether you understand why or have been left without an explanation, the pain of family estrangement can leave you wondering "How do I move forward from here?"

You replay conversations, question what you might have done differently, and struggle with feelings of guilt, shame and rejection. One day you want to reach out, hoping to reconnect. The next, you're wondering if it's better to step back and wait for your adult child to make the first move.

I understand those feelings because I've experienced them in my own estrangement journey.

In today’s episode of Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace, we’ll talk about the emotional struggle of being estranged from an adult son or daughter, the questions that keep you stuck, and how to begin moving forward even with the relationship remains unresolved.

Here's what I want you to know: Moving forward doesn't mean you stop loving your child or give up hope for reconciliation. It means recognizing that your life matters too.

You can keep the door open without standing in the doorway.

If you're ready to find more peace in your life while navigating family estrangement, I invite you to schedule a complimentary 30-minute conversation with me at beckykolb.com/lets-talk

  • 86: Family Estrangement: How to Stop Waiting for an Apology and Start Living Life
    Oct 21 2026

How to Find Peace When You Never Get an Apology or Explanation

Are you still waiting for that phone call? The one where you estranged loved one finally explains what happened, says they're sorry, or tells you they want to make things right?

Maybe you've imagined that conversation a hundred times. You've rehearsed what you would say, hoped for an explanation, and wondered if today might finally be the day.

But what happens when the phone doesn't ring? The text is ignored?

One of the hardest parts of family estrangement is living with unanswered questions. We can spend so much time waiting for someone else to do something and end up putting our own happiness and peace on hold.

In this episode of Estrangement: Turning Pain into Peace we're talking about what it means to let go of expectations, stop waiting for an apology or explanation, and begin putting your energy into the things you actually can control.

Moving forward doesn't mean you no longer love that person. It doesn't mean you've closed the door on reconciliation. It simply means you're choosing not to spend another day standing in the doorway waiting for someone else to open it.

  • 85: Waiting for Your Estranged Loved One to Change
    Oct 2 2026

Waiting for your estranged one to change is often postponing your own life.

When someone you love walks away, waiting can become a way of life.

You wait for the phone to ring.

    You check your texts.

You wonder if today might be the day you hear from them.

A birthday comes around and you wonder if they'll reach out. Then a holiday. Then another birthday.

And somewhere along the way, without even realizing it, you can begin putting your own life on hold.

    I understand why.

When a relationship is important to us, we want to fix it. We think if we can just find the right words, give it enough time, apologize one more time, explain ourselves better or reach out at just the right moment, maybe things will change.

Hope isn't a bad thing. I don't believe you have to give up hope for reconciliation.

But there is a difference between having hope and living in waiting.

And sometimes that difference is hard to see.

  • 83: How to Avoid Cynical Thinking in Estrangement
    Aug 19 2026

Cynical thinking in estrangement is more common than you may realize. What exactly is cynicism? Do you have unrealistic or inappropriate expectations of others? Let me ask another way.

Are you hardened, bitter and jaded when you think of your estranged loved one? That’s a question that I would ask you to ponder in prayer before God. I would have said no to that question, but the reality is that cynical thinking was embedded deep within and I couldn’t see it.

Estrangement hurts deeply. The tendency to lash out, defend and even engage in cynical thinking is an outcome. The good news is there is a way to counter it – once it’s recognized. Let’s take a look.
