• Firefighters & Cardiac Death; HFimpEF & Sex Differences; DAPT, DOAC, and LAAO; Non-lnfarct-Related IRA & CAD
    Oct 28 2026

In this week's View, Dr. Eagle looks at a brief report on how cardiac death remains a substantial contributor to on-duty mortality of U.S. firefighters, and how drivers of this trend may not be well identified by the current screening approaches. He then examines a recent article in JACC Heart Failure on how heart failure with improved ejection fraction (HFimpEF) was associated with better outcomes than persistent heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) in both women and men. He follows that with a look at a metanalysis that compared dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) and direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) monotherapy and their effects on device-related thrombosis (DRT) and major bleeding after left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO). Finally, Dr. Eagle offers a summary of an analysis a recent study the reported modest increase in noninfarct-related artery (non-IRA) revascularization in patients with STEMI and multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD), with some caveats.

  • CAC, CRF & Dementia; Athletes & Arrhythmia; Vutrisaran & Amyloid Burden; NT0proBNP Screening & Heart Failure
    Aug 26 2026

In this week's View, Dr. Eagle looks at the relationship between lower cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and higher coronary artery calcium scores (CAC) and later-life dementia. He follows this with a look at a new State of the Art Review related to guidance on treating athletes with arrhythmia. He then offers a perspective on the use of vutrisiran in the treatment of amyloid burden. Finally, Dr. Eagle explores the TARTAN-HF study on NT-proBNP screening and its ability to identify undiagnosed heart failure (HF) among patients with diabetes.

  • M-TEER, MR, & LV Dysfunction, Stress Perfusion CMR & CAD; Sacubutril/Valsartan, Cardiac Remodeling, and Non-Obstructive HCM.
    Sep 2 2026

In this week's View, Dr. Eagle evaluates how sacubitril/valsartan promotes cardiac remodeling, but not functional capacity, in nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Next, he examines the prognostic value of stress perfusion cardiac magnetic resonance in patients with suspected coronary artery disease. Finally, Dr. Eagle explores a study on mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) and its effectiveness for treatment of patients with ventricular functional mitral regurgitation (MR) and very severe left ventricular (LV) dysfunction.

  • Top Five Trials from ESC 26: SINGLE-AF, REBOOT-PARADOX, ViVA, REACT, NOTION-4
    Sep 9 2026
In this week's View, Dr. Eagle looks at some of the important trials presented at this year's European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress. First, he evaluates the SINGLE-AF trial on DOAC therapy versus no anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation (AFib) with patients with intermediate stroke risk. Dr. Eagle then examines REBOOT-PARADOX and its study of the potential value of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in symptomatic patients with low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis. Next, Dr. Eagle covers ViVA, a randomized trial that looked at vericiguat for the treatment of coronary vasospasm, followed by a summary of the REACT trial that investigated the use of imaging to detect silent atherosclerosis in early adulthood. Finally, Dr. Eagle explores NOTION-4, which looks at short-term direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) therapy and subclinical leaflet thickening after TAVR. Subscribe to Eagle's Eye View

  • CV Subspecialty Training; a Novel Left Atrium Staging Framework; the (IL)-6 Inflammatory Biomarker, HF Risk & Diabetes
    Sep 16 2026

In this week's View, Dr. Eagle looks at a recent article on proposed changes to the current cardiovascular (CV) subspecialty training path. He then examines an article on a novel left atrium (LA) staging framework that stratifies new-onset atrial fibrillation risk in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Finally, Dr. Eagle explores the results of a Look AHEAD ancillary study on the inflammatory biomarker interleukin (IL)-6 that identified residual inflammatory risk of incident heart failure (HF) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and overweight/obesity.

  • First Medical Contact, CV Toxicity and Antibody-Drug Conjugates, Extreme Heat & Blood Pressure, FinACAF & Lower Risk of ischemic Stroke
    Sep 23 2026

In this week's View, Dr. Eagle looks at a recent JACC: Advances Viewpoint that examines the challenges associated with implementing revisions to the definition of first medical contact (FMC) introduced in the 2025 ACC/AHA ACS Guideline and its implications for NCDR data collection. He then examines a cardiooncology primer on CV toxicity of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) in breast cancer and follows that with a look at extreme heat and blood press (BP) changes, especially among the elderly. Finally, Dr. Eagle explores the results of the FinACAF study that indicates patients with atrial flutter only (AFL-only) had a 40% lower risk of ischemic stroke than those with atrial fibrillation only (AFib-only).

  • Sex Disparities in CV Trials; eft Stellate Ganglion Blocks & CABG; Bifurcation Lesions; Managing Resistant Hypertension
    Oct 14 2026

In this week's View, Dr. Eagle looks at continued sex disparities in CV clinical trials. He then examines how preemptive left stellate ganglion block (SGB) is associated with a reduced incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in patients undergoing CABG. He follows that with a look at bifurcation lesions as analyzed in the OCTOBER Trial. Finally, Dr. Eagle offers a brief vignette on resistant hypertension and how to manage it.

  • Whole Grain Intake & CV Health, Talfamidis & Recurrent Cardiovascular Events, Revascularization & Improved Cognition, Coronary Blood Flow in Women
    Sep 30 2026

In this week's View, Dr. Eagle looks at how higher whole-grain intake was associated with improvements in multiple cardiometabolic risk factors in a meta-analysis of randomized trials. He then examines how concomitant use of tafamidis or heart failure (HF) therapies did not modify the treatment benefit of vutrisiran on all-cause mortality and recurrent cardiovascular events, according to a HELIOS-B analysis, and follows that with a look in the case of patients with severe asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis, adding revascularization with either carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) to intensive medical management (IMM) did not improve cognition compared with IMM alone, according to results from the CREST-2 randomized trials. Finally, Dr. Eagle explores how women in the CENTURY trial had higher coronary blood flow (CBF) than men while having a comparable burden of cardiovascular risk factors, similar treatment response and half the coronary events, offering a potential physiological explanation for the delayed clinical manifestation of coronary artery disease (CAD) in women.
