This week on Dem Vinyl Boyz, we fire up the Eliminator coupe, crank the guitars, and head deep into Texas with ZZ Top’s 1983 blockbuster album, Eliminator—the record that took a blues-rock trio from Houston and transformed them into international MTV superstars.

By the time Eliminator arrived, Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard had already spent more than a decade building their reputation on Texas blues, boogie rock, killer guitar riffs, and relentless touring. Albums like Tres Hombres had established ZZ Top as a serious rock band, with songs like “La Grange” becoming classics. But Eliminator was something different.

Released in 1983, the album took the band's blues foundation and injected it with synthesizers, drum machines, sequenced rhythms, and a polished sound perfectly suited for the new decade. The result was a fascinating collision between the Texas roadhouse and the technological sound of the MTV generation.

The album delivered some of ZZ Top's biggest songs, including “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” “Got Me Under Pressure,” and “TV Dinners.” Billy Gibbons’ unmistakable guitar tone remained front and center, but underneath it was a tighter, more electronic groove that made ZZ Top sound both familiar and completely reinvented.

Then came the videos.

The red 1933 Ford coupe known as the Eliminator, the mysterious ZZ Top women, spinning guitars, sunglasses, hot rods, and those legendary beards became instantly recognizable on MTV. The interconnected videos for “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs” helped turn ZZ Top into unlikely video-age icons and introduced the Texas Trio to an entirely new generation.

The gamble paid off. Eliminator became the biggest-selling album of ZZ Top's career and one of the defining rock records of the 1980s. Even more impressive, the band managed to embrace the technology and visual excess of the decade without completely abandoning the blues-driven identity that got them there.

In this episode, we dig into the story behind the album, the influence of longtime manager Bill Ham, ZZ Top’s rise from the Texas club circuit, the impact of MTV, the famous Eliminator car, and how three musicians who looked like they belonged in a dusty Texas bar somehow became some of the coolest guys on television.

This week on Dem Vinyl Boyz, we step into the luxurious, grimy, art-filled world of Westside Gunn with his critically acclaimed 2020 album, Pray for Paris—a record where Buffalo street rap collides with high fashion, fine art, professional wrestling, and the underground sound of Griselda.

The inspiration for Pray for Paris came after Westside Gunn attended Virgil Abloh’s Off-White fashion show during Paris Fashion Week in early 2020. That experience helped shape the album’s aesthetic: street culture presented as high art. Even the album cover makes that connection, using Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath, reworked by Abloh with Westside Gunn’s signature chains added to the imagery.

Musically, Pray for Paris is built around dusty samples, haunting loops, sparse drums, and Gunn’s unmistakable high-pitched delivery and trademark ad-libs. Rather than chasing the mainstream sound of 2020, Gunn created something that feels like a rare piece of art pressed onto vinyl.

The album brings together an incredible roster of guests and producers. Benny the Butcher and Conway the Machine join Gunn on the Griselda showcase “George Bondo,” while Freddie Gibbs and Roc Marciano appear on “$500 Ounces.” Tyler, the Creator and Billie Essco join him for “327,” and Joey Bada$$ and Tyler appear on the standout “327.” The project also features Wale on “French Toast” and production from names including The Alchemist, Daringer, DJ Muggs, Camoflauge Monk, and Tyler, the Creator.

Tracks such as “Allah Sent Me,” “George Bondo,” “327,” “$500 Ounces,” “Versace,” and “LE Djoliba” showcase what makes the album so distinctive. Gunn jumps between drug-game imagery, wrestling references, designer fashion, food, wealth, violence, and fine art, creating a world where the corner and the gallery somehow occupy the same space.

We also get into the story of Westside Gunn himself and the rise of Griselda Records. Alongside Conway and Benny, Gunn helped put Buffalo, New York on the hip-hop map while reviving an unapologetically raw style of East Coast rap. His influence extends beyond simply rapping—he approaches albums as a curator, obsessing over artwork, sequencing, production, fashion, and physical releases.

Join Dem Vinyl Boyz as we break down Pray for Paris, an album that helped turn underground hip-hop into luxury art without cleaning up any of its dirt. It's boom-bap in designer clothes, Buffalo by way of Paris, and one of the defining records of Westside Gunn and the Griselda movement.

This week on Dem Vinyl Boyz, we head straight into the grimy clubs of 1970s New York City and drop the needle on one of the most important punk rock albums ever recorded: the Ramones’ self-titled debut, Ramones.

Released in 1976, Ramones was fast, loud, stripped down, and completely different from the elaborate progressive rock and polished arena rock dominating much of the era. Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone, and Tommy Ramone took rock and roll back to its most basic ingredients: distorted guitars, pounding drums, unforgettable hooks, and songs that often came and went before you had time to catch your breath.

The album explodes out of the gate with “Blitzkrieg Bop” and its legendary “Hey! Ho! Let’s Go!” chant before tearing through tracks like “Beat on the Brat,” “Judy Is a Punk,” “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend,” and “53rd & 3rd.” The songs were funny, rebellious, strange, catchy, and unapologetically raw.

Although Ramones wasn't a massive commercial success when it was originally released, its influence became enormous. The album helped establish the blueprint for punk rock and inspired countless musicians in America and abroad. Its impact can be heard in everything from hardcore and alternative rock to grunge and the pop-punk explosion that arrived decades later.

We’ll also dive into the Ramones’ connection to New York’s legendary CBGB scene, their leather-jacket-and-ripped-jeans image, the simplicity that made Johnny Ramone’s guitar playing so influential, and how four guys pretending to be brothers helped change the direction of rock music.

Join Dem Vinyl Boyz as we spin Ramones, an album that proved you didn't need ten-minute guitar solos or million-dollar production to make history. Sometimes all you need is three chords, two minutes, a leather jacket, and a loud enough amplifier.

Hey! Ho! Let’s Go!
