  • Tigers Are Not Afraid: Narco Ghosts told from the kids point of view | CinemaJam Ep. 101
    Oct 10 2026
Five kids, a stolen phone, and a cartel poster hunting them down. The ghosts are the least of their worries. We continue our series Fear Speaks Spanish with Tigers Are Not Afraid (Vuelven, 2017), written and directed by Mexican filmmaker Issa López. Estrella loses her mother to the narco war and joins a street gang of children led by El Shine, who stole the wrong phone from the wrong people. Armed with three wishes, a trail of blood guiding her, and a tiger painted on the walls, the film blends dark fairy tale with urban horror, with Guillermo del Toro serving as its great fairy godfather.Sebastián chose it for its 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and for something more personal: as Colombians who grew up in the '80s and '90s, the violence chasing these children is not fiction. We discuss why social realism works better than the supernatural, why the jump scares telegraph themselves, the natural performances of Paola Lara and Juan Ramón López (with echoes of Rodrigo D: No futuro), Tenoch Huerta before he was Namor, and the inevitable comparisons to Pan's Labyrinth and La Llorona. In spoilers: the children's deaths, the final meadow, and what it means for tigers not to be afraid. And some news: we've reached 1,000 subscribers on YouTube and we're celebrating with merch.

  • The Devil's Backbone (2001) vs The Others (2001) - Del Toro vs Amenábar | CinemaJam VS 41
    Oct 1 2026

"What is a ghost?" 2001 gave us two answers, both made in Spain, and only one gets to stay.

This week on CinemaJam Versus: The Devil's Backbone (El espinazo del diablo, 2001, dir. Guillermo del Toro) vs The Others (2001, written, directed and scored by Alejandro Amenábar). An orphanage at the end of the Spanish Civil War with an unexploded bomb in the courtyard vs a fog-bound mansion in 1945 where no door opens until the last one is closed. A Mexican director made the Spanish ghost story, a Spanish director made the English one, and Sebastian and Pablo put them through six rounds to kick off ghost season. Because in October, el miedo habla español.

    What we get into:

    • A war movie with a ghost in it vs a ghost movie with a war in it: which one uses its war better?
    • Nicole Kidman carrying a whole movie, and Eduardo Noriega, the best scumbag in Spanish cinema.
    • Early Del Toro vs a director in total control. Both films are each director's third feature, and it shows.
    • The soundtrack round where Sebastian expected to be called crazy and wasn't.
    • THE twist: the best thing about The Others, or the thing holding it back? (Spoilers from 16:51.)
    • Why the living are the real monsters in both movies.

One of these films takes the belt with four points. Watch to find out which ghost gets to stay.

  • CinemaJam Ep. 97: Burocracia, Resistencia y Realismo Mágico en La Estrategia del Caracol
    Sep 5 2026

  • Possessor (2020) vs Humane (2024) - Cronenberg vs Cronenberg | CinemaJam VS 40
    Sep 24 2026

David Cronenberg made heads explode. Then two of his kids became directors. Who carries the family legacy better?

This week on CinemaJam Versus: Possessor (2020, written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg) vs Humane (2024, directed by Caitlin Cronenberg, written by Michael Sparaga). Sebastian and Pablo put the Cronenberg siblings in the ring: an assassin who hijacks other people's bodies with a brain implant vs a family forced to decide which of them gets euthanized before dessert. Six rounds, no hard feelings. Probably some hard feelings.

    What we get into:

    - Body horror vs social horror: Brandon keeps Dad's gore alive with practical, in-camera effects; Caitlin swaps it for a pitch-black dinner-party satire that plays closer to Knives Out than Scanners.

    - Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott playing the same person in two bodies, and Jennifer Jason Leigh stealing every movie we put her in (Annihilation, The Hateful Eight, and now this).

    - Enrico Colantoni's Bob, the government bureaucrat with "layer on top of layer," and Peter Gallagher's world-class eyebrows.

    - Pablo's confession: was Brandon just trying to out-gross his dad?

    - "That's the worst family I've ever seen." Why nobody in Humane is worth rooting for (except one sibling).

    - The bonus question: if David, Brandon and Caitlin all opened a movie the same weekend, which ticket do you buy?

One film sweeps. One barely scores. Watch to find out which Cronenberg kid takes the belt.

  • El Páramo - The Squad (Colombia, 2011) - CinemaJam Ep. 98
    Sep 20 2026
