Creating clarity with one another can be daunting. It is often easier to “generally” agree and move on. Or assume we understand each other and move on. Or let the other person believe they understood what you meant, but they really didn’t.

Asking the questions and taking the time to make sure we are crystal clear with another can be uncomfortable.

Yet when I look at my own life, especially the situations and relationships that matter the most to me, I see something so different:

Getting clear about what we expect from each other is an expression of love. It says, I care enough about you—and about us—and about this situation—to really understand and name what matters to us both.

Whether it’s with a customer, child, spouse, patient, friend, or colleague… investing the time and energy to get crystal clear about the agreements we enter into, is the key to committing to those agreements and to one another.

People want to be with people. ????

I flew to Minneapolis early AM the day before a speaking event so I could spend informal time with a client whom I don’t get to see in person often. It was awesome—personally and professionally very productive.

As I drove downtown Minneapolis to my next destination, I stopped at a crosswalk where two groups of people (must have been conference attendees) were reuniting. I could feel their joy — hugs, laughter, “I haven’t seen you in three years!” and “Show me all the pictures of your kids!” The excitement was palpable. ✨

Relationships spark in informal, intimate, spontaneous moments. That spark is almost impossible to replace. ????

I understand the value of flexibility. I appreciate that sometimes travel is tough. And yes, we can connect on video — but it’s harder to create those chance encounters that deepen trust and build relationships.

There’s just nothing like being together in person.

I often reflect on the questions I am asked after I deliver my signature inspirational keynote Choose & become. One question that comes up from time to time is this:

“How long did it take you to trust your husband, especially once you became a mother?”

For me, the answer is simple, but the journey to get there was not.

I was 35 when I married Joe. By then, I had spent years doing the individual work—counseling, deep self-reflection—that brought me to a place where I could choose to become a mom. And once I made that choice, I knew Joe was the partner I trusted with my whole heart.

Trust wasn’t something Joe had to earn after marriage or when Lilly was born. It was something I had already chosen, fully and completely, before we stepped into those chapters together.

Everybody’s relationship with trust looks different. My hope is that each of us finds, chooses, and embraces the person in life whom we can trust wholeheartedly.
