    In this episode discover the stories of Jewish women who, wanting to ‘do their bit’ for the war effort, became members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (or VAD), serving as nurses and in other first aid roles as part of the British Red Cross.

    British Jews in the First World War - We Were There Too collects, commemorates and tells the story of the Jewish community throughout Britain during the First World War.

    In this episode, discover what life was like for Jews living in the port town of Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, at the beginning of the 20th century. Many had arrived into the port after escaping antisemitism in Eastern Europe, and came to the UK for a better quality of life.

    This episode coincides with a special exhibition we are holding at Grimsby Town Hall in collaboration with North East Lincolnshire Archives, July 14th and 15th.

    In this first episode of our brand new podcast, discover the story of Joseph Kemper, the first Jew to serve in the Royal Flying Corps. Joseph was awarded the Medaille Militaire by the President of the French Republic in recognition of his distinguished service during the war, and was also awarded the OBE in 1944.
