  • Screening Osteoporosis
    Apr 22 2026

The lads sit down with Prof Neil Gittoes to discuss SCOOP (Screening in the Community to Reduce Osteoporotic Fractures). The study was a large UK trial (12,483 women, aged 70–85) finding that screening for fracture risk using FRAX and targeting treatment to high-risk individuals significantly reduces hip fractures.

Professor Gittoes is a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB), and Honorary Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Birmingham where he is Head of the Centre of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (CEDAM). More importantly he is Chair of the board of trustees at the Royal Osteoporosis Society

  • Calcium’s Thermostat
    Feb 5 2026

The lads sit down with Prof Raj Thakker to unpack the body’s calcium thermostat and why it matters for bone strength. Raj explains how faults in calcium-sensing pathways can cause hormone and mineral imbalance, increasing bone loss and fracture risk. We also discuss how genetic diagnosis can help families through earlier testing and prevention. A practical conversation connecting molecular biology to better osteoporosis care.

Prof Raj Thakker is Professor of Medicine at the William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London, and Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Oxford. He is also a Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford, and Editor-in-Chief of JBMR.

  • SABRE: A New Era for Osteoporosis Trials
    Dec 4 2025

The lads sit down with Mary Bouxsein to explore SABRE — the landmark project aiming to make BMD a validated regulatory endpoint in osteoporosis trials. Mary walks us through how her team brought together data from more than 160,000 patients, why this could transform the speed and ethics of future drug development, and what it means for equity and patient care. A big conversation with one of the true leaders in the field — and a glimpse into a future where better treatments reach people faster.

Mary Bouxsein is the Maurice E. Mueller Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Med School and Co-lead of the Study to Advance BMD as a Regulatory Endpoint (SABRE).

    Sep 2 2025

The lads spoke to Emma Duncan about genetic testing in bone medicine. Have you ever wondered how your genes determine your bone mass or response to bone medicines? Tune in to find out and how genetic research is going to improve your care.

Emma Duncan is Professor of Clinical Endocrinology at Kings College London.
