  • S4 E4: From Poverty to Physician: Dr. Betty-Ann Bernard on Women in Medicine, Leadership, & Purpose
    Oct 9 2026
What does it take to turn a dream into a life of purpose? In this episode of Behaviorally Speaking: Leadership for Change-Makers, Dr. Esther Bubb sits down with fellow Grenadian Dr. Betty-Ann Bernard, physician, educator, healthcare leader, and advocate, for a personal conversation about perseverance, purpose, leadership, and the journey from humble beginnings to medicine. Betty-Ann shares the story of growing up in Grenada, the influence of her family and especially her mother's emphasis on education, and how she developed the dream of becoming a physician. She takes us through her journey to studying medicine in Cuba, returning to Grenada, navigating professional challenges, and establishing herself as a woman in medicine. Together, Esther and Betty-Ann explore what leadership looks like when you are working directly with people, especially when what appears on the surface may not tell the whole story. Betty-Ann reflects on listening carefully to patients, looking beyond presenting symptoms, resisting assumptions, and recognizing when someone may need more than the immediate solution to the problem that brought them through the door. The conversation also takes a difficult but important turn toward gender-based violence, healthcare, education, and social change. Betty-Ann discusses the role healthcare professionals can play when individuals experiencing violence seek care, the challenges created by limited resources, and why education must be part of the larger conversation about prevention. At the heart of the episode is a message about purpose: using what you have learned, what you have experienced, and the opportunities you have been given to help create possibilities for others. From a young girl in Grenada with a dream of becoming a doctor to a physician committed to serving others, Dr. Betty-Ann Bernard's story is a reminder that “Sometimes you just have to dig deeper.” In this episode, we explore: Growing up in Grenada and the influence of family and educationBetty-Ann's journey from humble beginnings to becoming a physicianStudying medicine in Cuba and returning home to GrenadaPerseverance and overcoming professional challengesWomen pursuing careers in medicine and other traditionally challenging fieldsLooking beyond the presenting problem to understand the personCompassion, listening, and resisting assumptions in healthcareGender-based violence as a public health and leadership challengeThe role of education in prevention and social changeThe importance of purpose, service, and creating opportunities for others 🎙️ Listen now: From Poverty to Physician: Dr. Betty-Ann Bernard on Women in Medicine, Leadership & Purpose #BehaviorallySpeaking #LeadershipForChangeMakers #WomenInMedicine #Leadership #Purpose #Grenada #HealthcareLeadership #SocialChange 0.5 Free BCBA Ethics CEU Available If you would like to obtain 0.5 Free Ethics CEU after listening to the episode, email Dr. Bubb at mail@esthercbubbabaservices.com. • S4 E3: Understanding Human Behavior | Leadership, Crime, Trauma, and Systems Change with Dr. Timothy J. Templin
    Oct 2 2026
What can forensic behavior analysis teach us about leadership, trauma, crime, compassion, and changing systems? In this episode of Behaviorally Speaking: Leadership for Change-Makers, Dr. Esther Bubb sits down with Dr. Timothy J. Templin, Ph.D., BCBA, a behavior analyst with extensive experience in forensic psychiatric care and a longtime contributor to the field of forensic behavior analysis. Tim shares his journey from psychology and forensic psychiatric care into behavior analysis and criminal behaviorology—and explains why understanding the environment surrounding behavior is essential for effective leadership. Together, Esther and Tim explore: How environmental contingencies influence behavior and leadershipWhat behavior analysis can teach us about crime, aggression, and gender-based violenceWhy changes in reporting and data collection matter when interpreting increases in crimeHow trauma can shape behavior long after a traumatic experience occursEthical challenges when applying behavior analysis in forensic and correctional settingsWhy compassion and accountability can—and should—coexistHow inconsistent systems and staff responses can contribute to behavioral escalationThe importance of behavioral skills training, coaching, modeling, and reinforcement in changing institutional cultureWhy behavior analysts can—and perhaps should—work beyond traditional clinical settingsHow behavior science is already being used in fields such as criminal justice, worker safety, traffic safety, animal training, and other areasOne simple way leaders can become more behaviorally aware One of the central ideas emerging from the conversation is that behavior analysis does not belong to one setting or one job title. Behavior occurs everywhere—and understanding behavior can help us create more effective environments wherever we lead. As Tim reminds us, we do not always need to introduce people to technical terminology to help them use behavioral principles. Sometimes, leadership begins with simply helping people understand that different responses can produce different outcomes. Dr. Templin is the host of Criminal Behaviorology and is involved with the Crime and Behavior Academy, providing training and consultation related to crime and behavior analysis. • S4 E2: Leadership, Choice, and Care: Rethinking Assent in ABA with Dr. Matt Tincani
    Sep 25 2026
What does ethical leadership look like when individual choice, safety, autonomy, and meaningful outcomes do not always point in the same direction? In this episode of Behaviorally Speaking: Leadership for Change-Makers, Dr. Esther Bubb sits down with Dr. Matt Tincani, PhD, BCBA-D, Professor of Special Education and Applied Behavior Analysis at Temple University, for a thoughtful conversation about assent, autonomy, capacity, ethics, and the responsibilities that come with influencing others. Matt explains how he conceptualizes assent as behavior and discusses why distinguishing assent from consent, capacity, dissent, and autonomy matters. Together, Esther and Matt explore the risks of oversimplifying complex ethical questions and the importance of examining behavior, contingencies, capacity, safety, and the individual’s circumstances. The conversation moves beyond ABA as Esther and Matt consider how these ideas apply to leadership more broadly. What happens when people comply with a policy but are not truly willing? How can leaders create environments that support autonomy while still recognizing situations where safety and meaningful outcomes must be considered? And how do we create conditions where people can develop the skills they need to express preferences and make meaningful choices? Matt also introduces the idea of “balanced assent”—actively providing opportunities for assent where possible while recognizing that not every choice can or should be honored in every circumstance. This episode is an invitation to move beyond “either/or” thinking and toward greater curiosity, critical thinking, and evidence-informed decision-making. In this episode, we explore: Assent versus informed consentAssent as behavior and verbal behaviorCapacity and the ability to understand consequencesAutonomy and self-determinationSafety, choice, and competing valuesThe role of parents, caregivers, and other stakeholdersWhy behavior analysts should examine contingenciesThe danger of oversimplifying complex ethical questions“Balanced assent” and what it might mean in practiceWhy leaders should remain willing to revise their ideas as evidence evolves Listen, reflect, and consider: What conditions are you creating for the people you lead to learn, grow, and exercise meaningful choice? 0.5 Free BCBA Ethics CEU Available If you would like to obtain 0.5 Free Ethics CEU after listening to the episode, email Dr. Bubb at mail@esthercbubbabaservices.com. • S4 E1: Creating the Conditions for Growth | 4 Leadership Lessons from Viola Davis’s Finding Me
    Sep 18 2026
What can Viola Davis’s Finding Me teach us about leadership? In this Season 4 premiere of Behaviorally Speaking: Leadership for Change Makers, Dr. Esther C. Bubb explores four leadership lessons inspired by Davis’s memoir and examines them through a behavioral lens. This isn't a book review. It's a reflection on becoming. Dr. Bubb explores why leaders must examine their own behavioral histories, why we should never confuse someone's current behavior with their future potential, why people need opportunities to discover and use their voices, and how leaders can transform struggle into wisdom that benefits others. Drawing from her own experiences—from discovering applied behavior analysis to finding her voice growing up in Grenada and learning difficult lessons through professional experiences—Dr. Bubb connects these ideas to a central leadership philosophy: People can grow to more than they know. The question for leaders isn't merely, "How do I change this person?" Rather, it is: "What conditions might help this person discover what they are capable of becoming?" In this episode, you'll discover how a behavioral lens can move leadership beyond judgment and toward curiosity, understanding, opportunity, and growth. Inside this episode: • Four leadership lessons from Finding Me • Why self-awareness is a leadership responsibility • How leaders can avoid confusing current behavior with future potential • Why psychological safety matters when developing people's voices • How difficult experiences can become leadership wisdom • The power of changing conditions rather than simply trying to change people • A practical Monday Morning Move you can use immediately Listen, reflect, and consider: What possibility in the person you lead have you not yet unlocked? • S3 E9: Teaching for Belonging | Leadership Lessons on Neurodiversity, Inclusion, and Human Potential
    Sep 4 2026

What does it mean to create an environment where people feel safe, valued, respected, and empowered to grow?

In this episode of Behaviorally Speaking: Leadership for Change-Makers, Dr. Esther Bubb welcomes Julia Spychalski, M.Ed., an Autistic Support Teacher and emerging educational leader, for a conversation about neurodiversity, inclusion, belonging, and the leadership lessons we can learn from the classroom.

With more than two decades of experience supporting students with diverse learning, behavioral, and communication needs, Julia shares how her experiences in special education and early intervention shaped her belief that human potential cannot be defined by a diagnosis or traditional measures of success.

    Together, Esther and Julia explore:

    • Why success is about more than test scores and academics • How to hold high expectations while meeting people where they are • Why relationships and genuine listening are foundational to inclusion • The importance of assuming competence • How behavior and communication can be misunderstood • What psychological safety looks like in classrooms and teams • Why leaders must create space for people to take risks and make mistakes • How celebrating individuality can transform the way people experience belonging • Why leadership is about influence, support, advocacy, and empowerment—not simply a title • How small, everyday choices can create meaningful change

Julia also shares a unique perspective on what it means to be a "ruckus maker"—someone willing to use their voice, actions, and influence to create spaces that are more equitable, compassionate, and accessible.

The conversation closes with a simple Monday Morning Move: learn intentionally from someone with a different perspective or experience, ask questions with curiosity, and listen to understand rather than simply respond.

Inclusion begins with the small, daily choices we make to help people feel valued, respected, safe—and able to be themselves.

  • S3 E8: Change Leadership | Building Trust, Culture, & Systems for Lasting Growth
    Aug 28 2026

In this episode of Behaviorally Speaking: Leadership for Change-Makers, Dr. Esther Bubb sits down with Erin McGrenaghan, MS.Ed., BCBA, Training and Development Specialist, to explore what happens when we move beyond delivering information and begin intentionally creating the conditions for people to learn, grow, implement, and thrive.

Erin shares her journey from special education teacher to behavior analyst and professional development specialist—and how those experiences shaped her approach to adult learning, coaching, leadership, and professional development.

    Together, Esther and Erin explore:

    • Why meaningful relationships are at the heart of learning and change
    • How Behavior Skills Training can shape effective adult learning
    • Why trust and psychological safety are foundational to professional growth
    • The difference between passive, “stand-and-deliver” training and learning that changes behavior
    • How hands-on practice, collaboration, stories, and follow-up promote skill generalization
    • Why leaders should create cultures where people feel safe saying, “I don't know yet”
    • How professional development can become a system of growth rather than a checkbox
    • Why leaders should use feedback and data to determine what their teams actually need
    • How solution-focused problem solving can shift people from focusing on problems to identifying possibilities
    • And Erin's simple Monday Morning Move: pause, reflect, appreciate yourself, acknowledge someone else, and set an intention for growth.

One of the central ideas from this conversation is that change is more than introducing new information. It's about intentionally creating the conditions where improvement can happen—and helping people implement and sustain what they've learned.

If you're a leader, educator, BCBA, supervisor, coach, or change maker committed to developing people rather than simply directing them, this conversation is for you.

Listen, reflect, and then ask yourself: What conditions am I creating for the people I lead to grow?
