  • Ravana sorrows over the loss of those he has loved, including his brother and two sons. Indrajit is sent in for the final battle. But he is caught in a dilemma, for he thinks his father's strategy wrong, yet it is his dharma to obey. In battle, he shoots down Rama and Lakshmana. Hanuman brings the entire mountain containing the life-giving Sanjeevani plant to revive them. The conflict resumes. Ravan asks Indrajit to kill a Maya-Sita, but he refuses to harm a woman, even as an illusion. Eventually, he gives in to his father, creates an illusion of Sita, and beheads it in front of Rama. This affects the morale of the Vanaras. But Vibhishna sees through the deception. Indrajit, afflicted by remorse, withdraws to a cave to perform a ritual sacrifice. Lakshman enters the cave and kills him. Ravana summons Ahiravana and Mahiravana, his half-brothers. They kidnap Rama and Lakshmana and take them to the netherworld, Pathala Loka. Hanuman rescues them. Various versions of this story, including the Tantrik versions, are discussed. Ravana argues that he is a force of nature, so he is neither good nor bad. Rama replies that when nature becomes a danger to humans, a King must fight nature. Rama kills Ravana with the help of the intelligence Vibhishana provides about his brother’s vulnerability.
