  • Ep 356 May 2026 Plus Podcast Memories
    Apr 29 2026
This is my last podcast episode, Celiac Canada will be steering the ship from now on as I transfer the podcast to them. An exciting time for me as I know that Celiac Canada will be able to do amazing things when they take over. This podcast has two parts: first, I speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about articles she has brought to our attention over the past month, and; second Ellen and Cinde Little, the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet discuss some thoughts and memories about the podcast over the years. My first episode was a conversation with Melissa Secord in January, 2018 and I'm finishing off with Episode 356 – lots of fun times! Ellen and I talk about the CFIA recall of Gino Bambino Pizza Starter Kits from Costco due to mould (very unfortunate). We look at the evolving pathway to Diagnosis for adults in Italy where they seem to be ahead of the curve on this one. Ellen brings to our attention a study that was done regarding differing symptoms experienced by different ethnicities and races – something to think about. Dietary fibre is something we all know we need more of, but work being done at McMaster University with a helpful grant from the CCA's J.A. Campbell Fund, is finding that fibre may not be digested the same way in someone with celiac disease. They're also working on a specific gut bacteria which might make a real difference. Ellen talks to us about an in-depth study on what can go wrong in a diagnosis or misdiagnosis, and the importance of the medical community understanding those weak points in the pathway, in order to arrive at an accurate diagnosis sooner. Recently, California passed legislation that requires food producers who make masa (which is used in corn tortillas among other things), to fortify their masa flour with folic acid, an essential nutrient. Lack of this nutrient is a cause for some serious birth defects which are more prevalent in the Latino population. Wheat flour has been fortified for many years, but our gluten free flours are not – this could be a big step. We share stories and inside jokes. I'm grateful that my friends took the time to share these special moments with me. I will miss doing the podcast, but I'm confident that Celiac Canada will be able to take it to new heights. • Ep 355 Big Podcast News
    Apr 14 2026

The big news is out. I am transferring my podcast over to Celiac Canada. I'm thrilled to be speaking to Melissa Secord, CCA Executive Director and Caleigh McAuley, RD with CCA about future plans for the podcast as well as plans for Celiac Awareness Month in May.

Melissa let us in some of the ideas and plans the CCA has for the podcast which will begin with Episode 357. I've got one more episode to record with Ellen Bayens for the beginning of May.

With Melissa and Caleigh sharing the hosting duties for the conversations, there are so many opportunities that the CCA can bring to the podcast. They have appointed Leah Vlasic as podcast producer, and I'm happy to help in any way I can.

Stay tuned for a different perspective and some amazing conversations.

  • Ep 354 April 2026 Roundup with Ellen
    Apr 2 2026

It's the beginning of April and that means I have the opportunity to speak with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com to discuss the articles she has brought to our attention over the past month.

Ellen and I discuss a recent study that looks at how patients with celiac disease interact with their health care professionals. This is, of course dependent on the particular health care professional, but the study found that often celiac patients felt that their doctor was treating them with less respect as if they weren't very smart.

Ellen reminded us of the Conquer Study that you can still fill out. The study is looking at the experience of celiac adults as well as parents of celiac children. You can fill out the study at –

There has been a food recall for spice blends that Ellen brought to our attention. As well she told us about B Free products apparently being trialed in some Costco stores. The Fuller Bar, which was developed to be suitable for diabetics and is gluten free is available in some parts of BC and can be ordered online.

  • Ep #353 Selena and Ellen Talk Restaurants and Travel
    Mar 17 2026

This podcast afforded me the distinct pleasure of having a conversation with both Registered Dietitian Selena De Vries and Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com.

Selena often shares her insights into ordering and eating at fast food restaurants – something most of us miss, and Ellen has extensive experience with eating safely at a variety of restaurants. Our conversation can help identify what the real concerns are, and how to both prepare prior to arriving at the restaurant as well as the language to help you make safe choices.

We all get concerned about travelling, especially internationally, and both Selena and Ellen have some great advice to make this experience safer and more rewarding.

All three of us acknowledge the value of community, both being a part of a larger gluten free community and, when you can, contributing to that community for the benefit of all.

  • Ep 352 March 2026 Roundup with Ellen
    Mar 9 2026

It's the beginning of March 2026 and my opportunity again to chat with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about studies and topics she has brought to our attention over the past month.

Ellen and I tackle the tricky diagnosis of Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NSGS). I say tricky, because currently science is still struggling to find a way to make a diagnosis of celiac symptoms when a patient doesn't have the genetic predisposition for celiac disease. This question has been looking for an answer for a long time, and we may now be close. The good thing about NCGS is that Celiac Canada has welcomed those patients who suffer from eating gluten but may not fit the celiac diagnosis. We all share the same struggle.

Ellen shares her thoughts on my recent podcast with Nicole Byrom RD about talking with children about a diagnosis of celiac disease. Nicole and I looked at this question from different scenarios and Ellen admitted that at the time when she was explaining her diagnosis to her children years ago, she missed some of the things that kids might read into the diagnosis.

Ellen shares a (trial) find of Promise Gluten Free Bread at Costco and updates us on the Chocolate Covered Cheesecake from M & M Foodmarket.

  • Ep 351 Talking to Kids about Celiac Disease with Nicole Byrom RD
    Feb 18 2026

On this podcast I speak with Registered Dietician Nicole Byrom. Both Nicole and I have daughters with Celiac Disease. We break down our conversation into three portions – talking about a parent having celiac disease, talking about a diagnosis for the child, and talking about the diagnosis of a sibling. We also recognize that children require different approaches depending on their ages. We've broken down our discussions looking at different age groups – ages 5-10, ages 10-13 and ages 14+.

  • Ep 350 February 2026 Roundup
    Feb 10 2026

It's the beginning of February 2026 which means I can take the opportunity to speak again with Ellen Bayens of theceliacscene.com about news and information she has brought to our attention over the past month. Ellen and I spoke about a new app that may solve your problems with record-keeping for your gluten free food deduction on your taxes. We try and take some of they mysteries out of the ROME IV Criteria and its relationship with DGBI's. Below is the link to fill out the University of Alberta Survey.

  • Ep 349 Gluten Free Food Hacks with Cindi
    Jan 26 2026

On this podcast I speak with Cindi Little the Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet. I wanted to chat with Cindi to explore some of the ways gluten free convenience foods and mixes which have relatively recently exploded onto the market can be used in creative ways to be more satisfying and help us expand our daily menu selections.

Cindi and I speak about gluten free breaded chicken pieces that are now widely available as well as the many gluten free sauce and gravy mixes we find in our grocery stores. Cindi and I acknowledge that many people don't have access to the flours that would be used in traditional gluten free baking, but the abundance of gluten free baking mixes now available can go a long way to filling that gap.

You can find Cindi on her website Everyday Gluten Free Gourmet as well as on social media.
