When it comes to guardianships, you've heard the stories of abuse, over-medicating, theft, and embezzlement. The names Amanda Bynes, Casey Kasem, Brian Wilson, and Britney Spears come to mind. But the real problem in this domestic disaster is the unethical, immoral, and often illegal methods of attorneys, psychiatrists, medical doctors, and the courts. Some view guardianships as nothing more than a perpetual cash cow. A Study in Crime speaks with award-winning investigative journalist and author Diane Dimond. Diane Dimond Diane is an award-winning investigative journalist, syndicated columnist, and the author of 4 books including her 2023 book, We’re Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong. She's one of the most well-respected investigative journalists in the industry and has reported for CNBC, MSNBC, Court TV, The Daily Beast, Fox News, NPR’s All Things Considered, and Hard Copy, to name a few. It was Diane who broke the alleged child molestation charges against Michael Jackson. You can find more information about her in the show notes. Don't miss last week's episode, Mother Nature is a Serial Killer. Diane is the author of four books: We’re Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong (2023). Insurance fraud is a criminal act. And in Philadelphia it's legendary. The City of Brotherly Love is famous for fraudulent auto accident techniques like the Swoop and Squat. But the real problem in this Philadelphia experiment is the general acceptance of fraud. It's an ecosystem of claimants, tow truck drivers, body shops, chiropractors, attorneys, and the courts. A Study in Crime speaks with insurance fraud professional Robert Gaines. Insurance Fraud Professional Robert Gaines Robert is a former SIU investigator for the Special Investigative Unit of a large insurance company and currently works as a claims adjuster handling catastrophe claims. He’s also the facilitator of the Free Time Mastermind group. Robert has a degree in business management from the University of Louisville and is an Army veteran. He has been in the insurance industry since 2011. He is an expert on all things involving insurance fraud. Find him here: Website, Facebook, Youtube, and LinkedIn. Apr 16 2024
Dr. David Acer was a quiet, unassuming Florida dentist in the 1980s. Then several of his patients became infected with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Four of them would eventually die from the disease, including a patient named Kimberly Bergalis. Suddenly, a cloud of hysteria and phobia began to swirl around Dr. Acer. Did he infect his patients on purpose? Was it a crime? Was it an accident? Or was the idea that a healthcare provider could even infect a patient with AIDS all nonsense? A Study in Crime speaks with health science writer Courtney Southwick, MS, in the first episode of a new podcast. Health Science Writer Courtney Southwick Courtney is a freelance health science writer and the owner of Courtney Southwick Freelance, LLC.
