Sintesi dell'editore

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created with Alien: Covenant, a new chapter in his groundbreaking Alien adventure. Great story marred by recording gaps

Would you listen to Alien: Covenant again? Why?

I've already listened to this story twice to make sure the audio gaps was not my imagination. It wasn't.

Any additional comments?

Shame on the producer for not hearing the errors before this went live.

Not as great as I hoped

I've seen the movie and usually read the novels of movies I've seen to find out what changes were made or cut that could of made the story slightly different. In a way this novel plays out a lot like the movie and I'm not even completely done yet. There are lots of added dialogue and scenes that would of made the characters more enjoyable and not wasted like the film variant.
However the performance was rather dull almost flat. This would of helped with music or some sound effects to really feel like you're in a sci-fi horror genre but alas nothing.
Really disappointed since I can finish these in a day or two but this book has taken me now a week to listen and hard to finish.

Thankfully Better Than Movie

Other then that I simply can't say much. I'm a huge Alien fan so of course I was going to get this and I love Alan Dean Foster as well. Who by the way did a fantastic job flushing out the utter mess, confusion, and carnage Sir Ridley Scott's made of the very franchise he himself had a major role in creating! Low rating on story is due to Scott alone and reflects nothing whatsoever on Mr. Foster by the way. He could only write what was given to him to write. Thankfully he added a few things here that certainly helped flesh out the story and at least make it palatable! Certainly entertaining enough to listen to, to get one down the road, through a flight, or just as a proverbial bedtime story type of listen. Lady Anne ^^ö^^

One word... brutal!

This part of the series seems to be that way. Narration was superlative and flawless.

Great story with an odd performance

The story is great, along with the movie. However; the narrators woman/screaming voice sometimes made this a comedic listen for a horror story.

D. Foster, you can do better.

Story could 've been better. Prometheus storyline and Engineers should've been more prominent. Still, it is the Alien universe.

Yawn

If you've read or seen Prometheus save your money. Redundant themes from previous screen plays.

Very enjoyable!

This was my first audiobook to try out and definitely was a great choice. As I listened I was drawn into the story, it was very great. The alien franchise is a big favorite of mine so I enjoyed this a lot👍

Nothing special

As far as I can tell there is nothing here that wasn't in the movie. No extra exploration of the philosophical themes. No extra information on "the engineers". No extra character development.

Main character is still paper thin. The story reads more like a screenplay than a novel. Movie spesific lines like "I'm out of ammo!" meant to clue in a watching audience are still very prevalent.

Adiquate performance by the narrator, but nothing special. Some good male accents, but female shout (of which there is a lot of) is annoyingly bad.

Not worth it in my opinion. Watch the movie instead.

Like if the movie was right, but no more

It's like listening to a screen play of the movie, if they fixed all the inconsistencies of the movie. I don't feel the need to invest more time in the books because I don't think I will learn anything new or more.

The Perfect Companion

Having been slightly disappointed by the rushed feel of the movie which seemed purely driven by visceral delights this brilliantly narrated and written audio book reedresses the balance to show just how brilliant the film might have been. I would highly recommend the audio book as the perfect companion. I would also add that it stands tall on its own merits. In short - Brilliant!

Great addition

After seeing the film twice and liking it much better the second time and understanding it better I couldn't wait for the book to come out knowing it would have more detail in there and I wasn't disappointed.

The book is eloquently written and it really did help me understand the pitfalls of the film much better, the book drew up as much suspense as the film and like a good book I couldn't put it down... or stop listening...

Narrated well I thought, some narrators leave you with a dull thumping headache but Tom Taylorson does it justice.

I just hope the saga continues....

Foster does great, but underlying film is awful

Great novel by Foster, however the bad parts from the film come through. Characters are paper thin, story feels like it was made up during filming. Ignores previouse films and does its best to destroy what made the Xenomorphs great.

Foster does his best to try and fix these issues. Like trying to explain how David built his Xenomorphs using what the engineers had done previously. Unlike the film who says he created them out of thin air because he was bored.

Better than the film!

It's astounding to hear that with a few minor tweaks already present in the book, the movie could've been significantly better!
Minor but crucial details are in this novel that go a huge way towards explaining or allowing the listeners to be more forgiving of the incredible stupidity shown by many of the crew.
Also, clarifies some details about finding / creation of the xenomorph, which would've fit better with the existing franchise lore.

My only real issue is it is set less than 100 years in the future, yet the writing is as if it was thousands of years. Conversations about "ancient" geographical boundaries in respects to countries today. Another bit has to explain what cheese was! Sorry, these people know about classical music, drink liqueur and know John Denver, but don't know what cheese was or that the Earth was made up of countries less than a hundred years ago!?! - ridiculous

An Improvement on the Film!

I really enjoyed this book which was superbly performed by Tom Taylorson. The film was something of a disappointment, but this version fleshes out the story more so that some, not all, elements are improved upon and make more sense.

Only get it if you want the whole Aliens series

This is really quite a bad audiobook. I will try to explain why without spoilers.

Story: Even though this is the first (second if you count origins) Aliens book, it came out very late in the series/movie series. Because of that, it tries to explain how the xenomorphs came about. With that, it kind of ruins/spoils the threat and mystique of the rest of the series. I say 'ruin', because it is much less scary than whatever you imagine it may be when you first saw the Aliens movie, or heard any of the later books & audiodramas in the series. It is just a run of the mill technology runs amuck origins story. Second, this is already a very short book, but the first 3 hours nothing really happens. They are spend trying to describe the human characters and their relationships. Since this is the Aliens series and none of them are called Ripley, you know they are expandable anyway. So does it really matter who they are and what their motivations may be? The characterizations themselves are bad. It is mostly descriptive: 'This is the hardass one, she was the smart one, and so on. None of the characters except maybe Daniels are sympathetic, all seem incredible incompetent and willfully obtuse. Some are downright dumb. It is just not a fun bunch to get to know. Why care about them? Why not spend those first 3 hours upping the tension and scare-factor instead of telling us about unpleasant people? There is just no adrenaline. The strength of the Aliens series is humans trying to escape, fighting a monster. Not how a particular group of people dislikes their coworkers and other petty things. Also, every plot twist is telegraphed a mile in advance, including the last, final 'shocker'. If you didn't see that one coming, you must be equally dense as some of the characters in this book.

Narration: The narrator has a pleasant reading voice, and I would happily read any regular audiobook narrated by him. But, he has two major flaws in this one. One: he can not do women's voices properly, and two; he can not do screaming people well. In both cases, he pitches his voice in a really strange, high, affected way. It sounds downright weird, kind of comical. Because most of the dialogue in the later scenes is people screaming at each other (yelling instructions, screaming that there is a monster behind the other one) it really spoils the tension and atmosphere. With both genders it just sounds like monty phyton women in a sketch yelling "spam spam spam". In the beginning of the book it is not so noticeable yet, but it really starts to grate after a while. He tries to restrain his voice so that it is not too loud, but it just sounds like spoken high pitched cartoon shrieks. The action sequences are ruined for me because of that.

Why still get this book? If it is on sale, and you are a completionist. If you start with the entire series, I would advise you to start with book 3 (based on the first movie), work to the end, and THEN read book 1 (origins) and 2 (convenant). But honestly, I could have done without this.

Dreadful - Narrated by a synthetic

The narrator (Tom Taylorson) sounds like a robot. Reminds me of the voice program for the Amiga 500.

Avoid.

Watch the movie! This book will disappoint!

The story was essentially the same as the movie.

The Character voices where pretty awful and laughable especially when doing a female character

I would have been happy not to have listened to this.

If you have seen the movie and where hoping for some little extra snippets to fill in the blanks or expand the story I wouldn't bother with this book!

It does not feel as grand, or scenic as the film, and fails to capture the actual horror of being stranded on a planet of stuck on a ship with an alien creature.

Disappointing!
