The son of a poor widow, Aladdin is an idle boy easily deceived by a sorcerer pretending to be Aladdin's long lost uncle. ಗಿರೀಶ ಕಾರ್ನಾಡ ಅವರು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ-ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ಕತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ ನಾಟಕ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬ ಆರೋಪ ಸರ್ವೇಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ. ಕಾರ್ನಾಡರ 'ಅಂಜುಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ' ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಅಪವಾದದಂತಿದೆ. ಇದೊಂದು ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು ಉಳ್ಳ ನಾಟಕ. ನಾಟಕೀಯ ಅಂಶಗಳು ಈ ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವೆ. ಆದರೆ, ರಂಗದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಈ ನಾಟಕ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಕಾಣಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಓದು ನಾಟಕವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಿಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆಯಾದರೂ ಗಾಢವಾಗಿ ತಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರ ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್.ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ 'ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ' ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಬದುಕಿನ ಬೇರುಗಳನ್ನು ಶೋಧಿಸುವ ಕೃತಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಬದುಕಿನ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮ, ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣ ನೆಲೆಗಳ ಆಳಕ್ಕಿಳಿದು ಪ್ರಖರವಾದ ವೈಚಾರಿಕ, ತಾತ್ತ್ವಿಕ, ಮಾನವೀಯ ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಸಂವೇದನಾಶೀಲತೆಯಿಂದ ಶೋಧಿಸುವ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ 'ವಂಶವೃಕ್ಷ'. ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮ, ವಿದವೆಯ ಮರು ಮದುವೆ, ಎರಡನೇ ಮದುವೆ, ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ಕಟ್ಟು ಪಾಡು ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಕಾದಂಬರಿಕಾರರು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 1965 ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಧವೆಯ ಮರು ವಿವಾಹವೆಂದರೆ ಮೂಗು ಮುರಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಅಂಥ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಸಮಾಜದ ಕಟ್ಟು ಪಾಡನ್ನು ಮುರಿದು ಹೊಸ ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ನಾಂದಿ ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
