This old man was an utter failure in life, with no proper job, or sense of responsibility towards his family right from the time of his marriage. He virtually becomes a pauper. His wife had to find all sorts of odd jobs, in order to feed her children and bring them up reasonably well in life. Once the children get settled in life, she turns extremely bitter towards her old husband and keeps chiding him for all his callousness in life. Frustrated, the old man would run away from the family for a couple of days and then return home shamelessly. It becomes a regular affair.

Oldman Venkatesan goes to meet his longtime friend Visu at the old age home. He was impressed by Visu's comfortable and independent lifestyle at the Home, without leaning on or longing for the support of his well-to-do sons and daughters. Visu tempts his friend to join the home like him. Venkatesan gets disturbed, as he starts mulling over the seemingly negligent and callous behavior of his son and daughter in law who are taking care of him.

This is a story with a spiritual background. Sebastian, a Christian fisherman, sees a Hindu sage repeatedly in his dreams, where the sage seems to be coming to rescue him from the fury of lava flowing from a volcano. He comes to know that the sage indeed lives in a Chennai suburb. Out of curiosity, he goes to meet the sage. He was both confused as well as attracted by the sage's quirky speeches and behavior.
