In 1920s England, private detective Henry Fleming is visiting his friend, retired author Lily Riley, in the quintessentially English village of Fulbridge. Tragedy strikes when a resident is murdered, stabbed through the heart, in the historic local church. When an inexperienced Scotland Yard detective arrives to investigate the case, Lily is accused of the terrible crime. With no sign of a murder weapon, and no obvious motive, Fleming realises it will fall to him to prove his friend's innocence and solve the baffling case.

A storm is raging over Damson Island, a desolate yet beautiful rocky outcrop off the south coast of England. The island's magnificent main house belongs to theatre director Randall Dobson, a man desperate to have his play ready for its West End stage debut. With time running out, he asks leading cast members to attend final rehearsals there. Cut off from the mainland by the storm, tensions rise, accusations fly and secrets are whispered. But despite old rivalries resurfacing and jealousy rearing its ugly head, it still comes as a shock when one of their number is brutally murdered.

Private detective Henry Fleming, having just wrapped up a case which has taken him to Venice, has decided to stay for a few more days to explore the city and sample some of its renowned sweet confections. However, no sooner does one investigation end than another begins. Sir Ernest Templeton, also holidaying in Venice with his wife, has received an intimidating poison pen letter which he regards as ‘stuff and nonsense!', although Lady Templeton is insistent that the writer poses a genuine threat to her husband's life.

In 1920s England, private detective Henry Fleming is invited to spend the weekend at Watermead Manor to celebrate the marriage of Gerald and Ida Langley. The handsome millionaire had been instantly smitten with the glamorous Ida and, after a whirlwind romance, they had married in secret. Upon returning to England, however, it soon becomes apparent that not everyone is pleased or excited about the marriage and very soon accusations begin to fly about Ida's motives: Does she really love him, or is she just an opportunistic gold-digger?
