Twelve-year-old human Sophie Dawes lives a good life in Hopetown. There, vampires and humans live in harmony, and Sophie and her adoptive vampire moms are living (or unliving) proof. There are a lot of rules that vampires must follow to keep the humans they live around feeling safe, but if regular visits from child protective services and abiding by a nightly curfew keeps their family together, Sophie will do anything to stay with her loving vampire parents. But then, normal law-abiding vampires begin to go rogue.

Marcy’s Tea Room owner Laney Powers is excited to accept an award from a prestigious magazine and is too distracted by running her now booming business to be nervous about her upcoming interview. Before the reporter and his photographer arrive in her charming new hometown of Iberden, Vermont, one of the tearoom’s elderly patrons is discovered dead in the rose garden. As if Laney didn’t have enough fires to put out, she also discovers that there are questions about the full ownership of the tea room.

Tea Room owner and reluctant amateur sleuth Laney Powers decides to enjoy some of the natural beauty of Vermont and travels to a popular nearby hiking spot. She runs into the Mayor of Iberden, Raymond Andrews, who decides to join her on the hike, and knowing that there’s safety in numbers, Laney is glad for the company. The hike turns into a murder investigation when they make a gruesome discovery on the trail.

Freelance artist Delaney Powers has just had a really bad breakup when she receives news that will change her life forever. Astonished to learn that her dearly departed grandmother has willed Delaney her once-popular tea room, the struggling artist boards a bus to Vermont. Facing a life of uncertainty and scratching out a meager living in New York City, she decides on the spot to reopen Grandma Marcy’s now-defunct tea room, which is conveniently located in a large Victorian house. In one fell swoop, Delaney now has a new home and business.
