On April 18, 2017, Charlie unexpectedly loses her only child, sixteen-year-old Isaac. Devastated, she throws herself into investigating the circumstances of his death, which she suspects was related to medical negligence. As Charlie falls into darkness, she begins to sense that Isaac is communicating with her from the other side, a spiritual realm where he returns after crossing over. There, Isaac calls upon four generations of his ancestors to help him save his mother’s life.

Name’s Jess. The superhero version is called Just Jess, but I feel like Desperate Jess is a better moniker. My to-do list grew exponentially. (Translation: In addition to my normal duties of reviewing superpowers, I have to find a cure for my sister, solve two power puzzles, and work with Mayor Shady Pants’s misfit crew of Supers.) Saving my sister may involve defying the government overlords and that’s not healthy for other people in my life. If I don’t pull off several miracles, my sister may only be the first of many casualties.

Name’s Jess, but my official superhero name is Just Jess. (Just as in justice according to one yappy reporter.) Because I have multiple Gifts, I get to be the poster child for superpowers. Lucky me. (Translation: I get to deal with suited ninnies in stuffy boardrooms, a big fat target on my back, and would-be supervillains who keep popping up like dandelions.) Chasing down bad guys might keep me out of the boardroom (always a plus), but the government head games threaten my sanity and my family.

Name’s Jess, and I have superpowers. A lot of them. You’d think that would make life easier. Wrong. Dead wrong. Having many superpowers landed me my first job out of college. (Translation: The government sent suited sweet-talkers with a carrot-and-stick approach to kidnap me and set me to reviewing superpowers.) Job Pros: Reviewing powers pays well, and my family stays off the scary people’s list of things-to-kill-today. Job Cons: It comes with a billion strings attached and a side serving of life-and-death situations.
