Overwhelmed by an ill-fated love affair, an unsatisfactory career as a model, and her mother’s crushing suicide, Leah Harper leaves Chicago and tragedy behind and heads west in her battered old Volkswagen. With the Colorado Rockies in sight, the long hours on the highway take their toll and Leah takes refuge in a cabin at a seedy motel. A raging storm moves in while she is showering in the out-building. She dashes back to her cabin only to be shocked by a blinding flash of lightning and an ominous figure who warns, “Turn on the light and you’re dead.”

Charlie has reluctantly returned to her childhood home of Boulder, Colorado, to be with her mother, who just had major surgery. Boulder evokes decidedly mixed feelings in Charlie. She left after her daughter, Libby, was conceived 16 years ago and hasn't returned until now. There's plenty to keep her emotions occupied, though, since her mother seems to be suspected of doing away with one of her neighbors.

Charlie's last case left her tired and emotionally drained, so her office staff convinces her to vacation in Kauai. Charlie is riding in a helicopter when she and the pilot spot a dead body lying on the rugged rocks of Kauai's NaPali coast. Mack Garvey, the owner of the helicopter tour company, is accused of the murder. Charlie wants to avoid the whole mess but is persuaded to help Garvey prove his innocence. As the tension builds, Charlie roots out the suspects one by one never dreaming that her own life is about to be snuffed out by sinister means.

This series looks sharply at those who perceive themselves as the rich - the elite, and revolves around expensive cars, clothes and posh country clubs. Fans of Sue Grafton, J.A. Jance, and Sara Peretsky will find Shelton's female sleuth captivating. Devout in her dedication for the underdog, Charlie Parker gets drawn into perilous predicaments while sticking her neck out for friends and clients in trouble. She proves a wily opponent for the evil she discovers.
